Water puppetry is a traditional art form, originating in northern Vietnam. It is said to have developed from the shows performed by villagers in the flooded rice fields of the Red River Delta as they manipulated puppets over the water. Today, the modern performers stand chest deep in water and from behind a screen command the puppets with long wooden rods, depicting scenes based on Vietnamese folklore. The different stories are acted out with the background of traditional music using instruments such as drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes and cymbals.
Performances are an hour in length.
