Autumn is Rhode Island's most glorious season, though spring and summer are pleasant as well. These times bring in healthy-sized crowds due to favourable weather and special events. Weather usually remains warm throughout September, while cooler temperatures in October bring out the colourful foliage. Winter lasts too long for most people's tastes, stretching from December to April. During this period, visitors can expect temperatures below freezing and plenty of snow.

The epitome of Newport elegance, The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection was originally built as a summer residence for the Vanderbilt family. A century later it is now a luxury hotel and the perfect base for exploring Newport & Rhode Island.
As you walk into the The Vanderbilt with a glass of champagne in hand, you are immediately transported to Newport's Gilded Age, with all its splendour and opulence when impeccable service and taste were the norm. This after all is the Rhode Island resort famed for its fabulous summer mansions, commissioned in the early 20th Century by some of Americas elite families such as the Astors. As its name suggests, the Grace Vanderbilt was originally built in 1909 as a private house by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt. A century on and after a serious facelift the Grace Vanderbilt is now one of Newport’s finest luxury boutique hotels blending the building's original Beaux Art features with elegant modern design.
The hotel features 33 luxuriously-appointed rooms and suites, decorated in soft hues which enjoy views of the Historic Hill neighbourhood, Trinity Church, Thames Street or Newport Harbour. A pillow and even fragrance menu come as standard and the minibar can be pre-stocked with your tipple of choice. Some of the rooms and suites interconnect which makes them ideal for families.
Food is a real treat at the hotel. From the champagne breakfast or lingering over brunch in the sunlit Conservatory to light lunch or an al fresco cocktail in the Garden Terrace to the more formal gourmet restaurant, Muse by Jonathan Cartwright, guests will enjoy fantastic service and the best of New England produce. In summer head to the rooftop deck to soak in the stunning 360-degree panorama of the city and yachts in the harbour, or enjoy one of the outdoor cinema nights, with old classics accompanied by bowls of truffled popcorn. After dinner the cocktail bar comes with a dash of Gatsby-esque glamour, and where better to shoot some pool in the wood-panelled Snooker Room.
Other facilities at the The Vanderbilt include a fitness centre, indoor and outdoor pools and a relaxing spa.
With its enviable location in the heart of historic Newport with its chic boutiques, restaurants, galleries and markets, why not see how the other half lived and tour the island’s many splendid period mansions along the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk. Newport’s allure hails from the sea, and this is a sailing town through and through, with sailboats crowding the harbour in summer. There is the Tennis Hall of Fame and a number of notable music and food festivals throughout the year. Across the bridge are award winning wineries and further along the coast explore the Mystic Seaport with its museum that recreates the atmosphere of America’s maritime past.
Grace Vanderbilt has a selection of 33 suites and guest rooms. Rooms have views of the Historic Hill neighbourhood, a king or queen size bed, a kitchenette, minibar and coffee machine. Some of the suites are two-bedroomed, providing the ideal accommodation option for families. They, in addition, feature a spacious living area, views of either the Garden Terrace, Trinity Church, Newport Harbor or Thames Street.
Children are welcome to come and stay at Grace Vanderbilt. However, there are no specific facilities available for them at the hotel. Baby cots and extra beds can be added to the larger rooms. There is no children's menu at the restaurant but the chef will help to cater for the younger one's tastes.
The outstanding award-wining Muse restaurant is found at Grace Vanderbilt. The menu offers traditional European cuisine using local produce to give them a taste of Rhode Island. The bar has selection of fine wines, spirits and cocktails to offer in a elegant environment. The bright and airy Conservatory provides a more casual atmosphere for lighter meals.
Grace Vanderbilt has a small spa with an indoor lap pool, fitness centre, treatment rooms, saunas and steam showers. You can talk to the spa manager to work out an individual treatment plan to help soothe and rejuvenate. In summer an outdoor pool is also on offer.
The Grace Vanderbilt is located in the heart of the historic Newport town renowned for its mansions, beaches, museums and marinas. The 3.5 mile cliff walk takes you around the natural beauty of Newport and gives you an insight into its architectural history. At the downtown waterfront you will find the majority of the shops, museums and wonderful dining options.
Throughout the summer there are outdoor concerts and movie screenings, polo matches and local baseball matches and the hotel can arrange boat rentals to explore the coast. Tennis fans will love the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and art lovers the National Museum of American Illustration and the Newport Art Museum.

The Vanderbilt is Newport encompassed. From it's grand entrance to it's warm welcome, cosy feel and rooftop terrace with incredible views, it is the essence of Newport. This nautical town can be a little touristy and busy, yet tucked away a mere couple of minutes walk from the main street, the Vanderbilt is a serene haven to escape too. After spending the day exploring the historic mansions, walking the beautiful cliff top trail and perusing the many gift and clothes shops of the town, it was wonderful to return to this beautiful historic home for a drink on the rooftop terrace as the sunset roared across the sky, turning it an impressive red and orange as the boats bobbed up and down in the harbour. Both the town and the inn have heart and spending a night or two here ensures you are right at the heart of Newport. It's worth a little side trip here before heading to the beach for a different side of a Rhode Island visit.

The Grace Vanderbilt, located a few minutes walk from town and cute Butlers Wharf, is a handsome Gilded Age red-brick mansion which exudes bygone-day charm. Rooms are all a little different in terms of style and layout due to the historic building but cater well for both couples and families. My favourites were the Master Junior Suites due to the open plan space and high ceilings - perfect for couples (but also have a sofa bed), and the Admiral One Bedroom Suites, which work really well for those travelling with children due to the closed off living space and sofa bed.Staff go the extra mile to make guests feel welcome, and the hotel has a wonderful buzzy atmosphere in the summer. There are two pools an indoor lap pool (originally YMCA) downstairs by the spa, and a smaller pool out on the terrace with loungers.
