Newport, Rhode Island is the East Coast resort famed or its fabulous summer mansions, commissioned in the early 20th Century by some of Americas elite families such as the Astors and Vanderbilts. A stay at the Chanler, which is one of the original Gilded Age mansions, transports guests back to this bygone era where glamour and opulence were de rigueur.
The journey starts as you drive past the beautiful manicured lawns and spectacular houses that typify Newport and through the wrought iron gates to the grand entrance of the Chanler. Much care has been taken to retain the historic feel of the mansion with lots of wooden panelling, antiques and fine art, however this is mixed with 21st Century mod-cons to ensure a relaxing and luxurious stay.
Each of the 20 rooms has its own individual style with no expense spared on the sumptuous fabrics, wallpapers and furniture. The Chanler is more a hotel for romantics less for minimalists!
Food at the Chanler is very much present day prepared by chefs from the open kitchen of Cara restaurant. Start the day with a relaxed breakfast in the Veranda or on the breezy Cliff Walk terrace - also a good spot for a casual lunch. Dinner is more formal - Cara is well known for its signature ‘New England Tasting Menu’ of six or nine courses in addition to an a la carte menu featuring Continental cuisine.
Walk off breakfast or lunch with a stroll along the Cliff Walk comparing the extravagance of the mansions, charter a boat for the day or pack a picnic and head to the beach.

The Chanler enjoys a fantastic location right at the beginning of Newport's Cliff Walk with its opulent Gilded-Age Mansions and views over the ocean. Downtown Newport is 20 minutes walk and the International Tennis Hall of fame is just 5 minutes away.
It is a 7-hour 30-minute direct international flight to Boston's Logan International Airport with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. From Boston it is a drive of about 2- hours to Newport, Rhode Island.
