November to March is the ideal time to visit weather wise. The very popular peak summer season from Christmas to mid-February gets booked up well in advance so best to plan early. During this period the whole place comes alive and there is a great party atmosphere. It is worth bearing in mind however that during the quieter season - including November, many of the area's bars and restaurants are closed which does tend to restrict eating options to your hotel.
A strikingly contemporary avant-garde beachfront hotel in Uruguay’s ever-popular village of Jose Ignacio and sister property to Estancia Vik. Playa Vik offers exceptional design, a fabulous location, friendly service and a superb collection of art.
Playa Vik is the newest property in the uber exclusive fishing village of Jose Ignacio, located approximately 12 miles northeast of the glitzy party town of Punta del Este. It has a majestic setting, perched on a small hill, with sweeping views across the Atlantic Ocean and the stunning Playa Mansa below, which has a sunset like no other in the country.
Playa Vik has six individual casitas from two to three bedrooms and a central 'Sculpture building', which houses a further four suites, a living room furnished with sofas and offbeat sculptural pieces, a formal dining room, a library furnished with a small selection of books, a games room, a couple of small treatment rooms and a 40ft wine cellar, as well as a stunning, elevated infinity pool jutting out towards the Atlantic.
With its distinctive style, Playa Vik is ideal for guests who enjoy cutting edge architecture and art, and an oceanfront getaway with casas that feel more like chic urban apartments. Contemporary artwork from Uruguay and beyond (by artists including Zaha Hadid, Anselm Kiefer and James Turrell) grace the walls of the main building, which has a dramatic, 55-foot inclined facade and wide expanses of glass that maximize the ocean views.
Cuisine is similar to that served at the sister property Estancia Vik, with a focus on expertly prepared, freshly caught seafood, locally grown vegetables, and plenty of Uruguayan beef. The property’s indoor dining room has large glass windows that look out on the beach. In this outdoor area is plenty of barbecue space, a 14-foot dining table and a fire pit surrounded by comfortable seating, ideal for warming up on chilly evenings.
Fantastic restaurants and great nightlife await down the road in Punta del Este. Dance till dawn, sleep in till noon, lounge by the pool, stroll along the beach, surf, indulge in decadent food and wine, learn to play polo and horseback ride at Estancia Vik and master the art of laid back luxury!
Playa Vik has six casas (three of the casas have three bedrooms and three with two bedrooms) and four suites in the Sculpture Building.
Children are welcome to come and stay at Playa Vik, although no formal children's activities are available. The hotel has a games room featuring table tennis, a Wii, chess and other games and babysitting can easily be arranged upon request.
Playa Vik features a living room and dining room, small library, restaurant, bar lounge, outside pool and pool terrace, small gym and a couple of treatment rooms
The sister property Estancia Vik is close by for guests keen to go horse riding and play polo. Other activities nearby include golf, kitesurfing and windsurfing, sailing, watersports such as kayaking, mountain biking, fishing, and hiking.
The safest of the South American countries, it turns out that Latin Americans have been holidaying there for years, attracted by the pristine beaches and upscale hangouts. But while the rest of the world is just discovering the area, the local glitterati have already moved on. Twelve miles northeast to the tiny fishing village of Jose Ignacio, drawn by the cool bohemian vibe (the likes of Shakira, Argentinean polo stars and Latin filmmakers all have homes here)...Set against the rustic whitewashed cottages of Jose Ignacio, the modernist retreat of Playa Vik stands in jaw-dropping contrast.
It's hard to say what impressed Stylist the most (as this place has the wow-factor oozing out of every wall) but the central building's entrance certainly had us at 'hello'. You enter the 55-foot inclined facade through a monumental bronze door...and are immediately struck by the communal space flooded with light. One minute you're brushing past a sculptural bench - Iceberg, by Zaha Hadid - the next you're dining against a wall of pulsating light by James Turrell. This is serious grown up luxury...We loved the mix of ultra-modern design crossed with an eco-conscience...Each casa is individually designed but all have amazing, 'living roofs' strewn with hot-pink bougainvillea, retractable glass walls and wooden terraces...Stylist will never forget the evenings huddled under a blanket by the outside fire pit. Here we breathed in the fresh sea breeze and were awed by endless views of the majestic coastline. Playa Vik is the ultimate spot to watch what is considered the best sunset in the world.
