Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.

December to March, is the Wildebeest calving season. In April and May, the rut begins and the plains dry out so the herd begin the journey north. June and July, the migration gathers momentum and the herds enter the Serengeti Western Corridor. It's here that the wildebeest and their newborn calves meet their first serious barrier in the form of the Grumeti River and its vast crocodiles. Between August and November, the migration reaches its northern range: the grasslands on either bank of the crocodile-infested Mara River which the herds must cross not once, but twice, as they complete their migration.

To start planning your holiday to Kiota Camp

Kiota Camp is a luxurious bush camp in the heart of the Serengeti surrounded by open plains which offer spectacular game viewing year round. This is the perfect option for those looking for an authentic safari experience at a reasonable price.

A relative newcomer to the Serengeti safari scene, Kiota Camp is fast establishing itself as one of our favourite spots in the Serengeti. Situated in the central Serengeti, Kiota manages to take advantage of the high densities of game that the area is regarded for - particularly for big cats - whilst avoiding the crowds; ensuring a perfectly balanced experience.

Kiota Camp provides accommodation in 10 en-suite tents with bucket showers, but each tent can also sleep two children staying with their parents. All tents have power points for charging cameral equipment and there is a veranda at the front of the tent from where you can watch passing wildlife.

Sebastian Sattin (Staff)

7.5/10 - quite a no frills tented camp with fantastic views down onto the plains and subsequent hills of the central Serengeti, with plenty of game around camp. Tents are pretty basic and ever so slightly tatty in places but well appointed and the service is very kind and personal, if a bit clueless, so the price point seems right. Food is fine and the main problem is that the layout doesn't lend itself to much privacy. Either way, sitting on your deck enjoying the view and the wildlife is hard to fault.

    • The north of the Serengeti is where you will see the mighty river crossings in migration season. However, with the abundance of big cats and impressive rocky outcrops, we think this region is a highlight at any time of year.
