Half Day
Far more than a short village tour, this immersive experience truly connects travellers with a traditional farming lifestyle that is typical for many Sri Lankan families. Far from the crowds, you won’t see other tourists here, and will leave with a deeper understanding of how real people spend their days, chatting with them and sharing stories along the way. All revenue stays within the community, supporting sustainable livelihoods for the families involved.
Your host is a farmer who speaks English, who will act as your guide for the morning. The journey begins with a 40-minute ride on a Land Master, sitting on comfortable benches at the back as you tour the farm, learning about the history and importance of paddy cultivation in the region. From here, you’ll walk through an indigenous forest where elephants meander by night, to visit a local home. Step inside to see how a roti is formed and cooked over the flame, before enjoying it as a snack, accompanied by a delicious king coconut. Continue onwards on foot a short distance to the lake, passing the thatched huts where farmers keep watch at night to prevent elephants from raiding their crops. You’ll enjoy a relaxing boat ride for around 40-minutes, seeing the village homes from a different perspective and spotting birdlife along the way.
A tuk tuk waits for you on the shore to transport you to another small community where a delicious multi-course lunch will be prepared and cooked for you. Learn the techniques used in local cooking, perhaps try your hand at grinding spices for a curry with a pestle and mortar, and experience a truly authentic Sinhalese meal cooked with ingredients fresh from the farm to your table. The menus vary depending on seasonality and any dietary requirements of travellers but you will typically savour twelve dishes, so come with an appetite!
This experience offers an in-depth insight into life on a paddy farm and a connection with the warmth of local communities. We highly recommend it for all visitors seeking a meaningful insight into Sri Lankan culture and traditions. There are no food miles, this is a true farm to table experience, and no single-use plastics are used throughout the experience. You'll learn more about sustainable farming practices as
well as the challenges and solutions for human-elephant conflict.
