In Spring the scenery is beautiful with trees in blossom, and in the backdrop the mountains still have a covering of powder snow. The weather is usually pleasant in spring but there is a bit of contrast and snow is possible. The summer season is the best time to go; the weather is blissful and warm. Towards the end of September there are less tourists and the weather turns cooler. The winter is very cold, but Norway does have great activities in the snow and the scenery is breathtaking. Being on the West Coast of Norway the weather can be quite varied though throughout the year.
Insider's View
To start planning your holiday to Walaker Hotel
Description
Walaker Hotel is a charming, family-run hotel dating back to 1630. The hotel is set on the water’s edge in Solvorn, in the middle of the vast Sognefjord. Comprised of three parts, two historic buildings and a new wing, the hotel has 22 rooms in total.
The historic buildings date back to 1630 and house 10 double rooms and a twin. The rooms are very tastefully decorated in traditional Norwegian style with painted wooden floors, colourful wooden bed frames and William Morris-esque wallpaper. The bathrooms are small but contemporary with excellent showers, apart from the two larger corner rooms that have baths and enjoy views over the fjord.
The communal areas of the main house are filled with antiquities that tell the history of the past nine generations who have successfully run the hotel. The salon makes for a cosy evening by the fire with a glass of red wine, or a well deserved cup of tea and cinnamon bun after an energetic day’s hiking.
The food is an important aspect at Walaker Hotel where they serve a set, four course dinner each night using local produce as far as possible, and breakfast includes delicious apples and homemade jams made from plums and berries that grow around the hotel grounds. The dining room is reminiscent of a smart, turn of the twentieth century restaurant, adding to the antique and historic feel of the hotel without feeling outdated.
The gardens surrounding the hotel and are dotted with tables and chairs where you can enjoy tea in the sun in the summer and marvel at the incredible vista of mountains and fjord. The area has ample walking trails to suit all levels and is within easy reach of the Urnes Stave church, a small beach popular with the locals, and to Fjaerland and Jostedal glaciers.
Accommodation
All rooms are spacious and enjoy lovely views either of the pretty valley or the stunning fjord. Most bathrooms have showers, apart from the two corner rooms in the main building which have bathtubs. The walls are decorated in William Morris-style wallpaper and rooms are furnished with antiques.
The Main Building Rooms | A 17th Century coaching inn and guest house, the main building has stood the test of time, with much of it retaining its original features. There are 4 rooms on the upper floor, each with fjord views, while 3 rooms enjoy views up the valley. |
Tingstova Rooms | Tingstova is the oldest building at Walaker, dating back to 1630. The building was fully restored in 2001 and guest rooms emanate four completely different styles. The rooms all share a lovely veranda and three of the four enjoy views of both the garden and fjord, whilst room 50 enjoys views up the valley. |
Facilities
There is a tantalisingly delicious restaurant in Walaker Hotel, the dishes are made from fantastic local ingredients and really worth sampling. There is a fabulous four course set dinner menu on offer which would be a perfect way to taste everything from mountain venison to local farmhouse cheese.
Breakfast of homemade bread and jams and plenty more delicious treats is served in the restaurant and vital for the days activities.
Activities
The location of Walaker right on the fjord means proximity to excellent hiking, Norway’s oldest stave church, ample boat trips, two glaciers to marvel at and cross country skiing.
Hiking gear is highly recommended; boot or trainers, waterproof kit and gloves will be essential if you want to venture on proper hike.
Reviews

Walaker struck me as perfect for those seeking a little bit of history as well as creature comforts. The rooms blend old and new seamlessly with stylish bathrooms and stunning dcor. To wake up every morning with that view of the fjord is incredible.

I loved the decor because although it was antique, it's not old fashioned or outdated. Best of all the bathrooms are contemporary and showers excellent. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, the food delicious and the location right on the fjord second to none. It doesn't get better than that.
