Highlights
Historic, traditional and tasteful hotel
The half board 4-course set dinner is of an excellent standard
Great location right on fjord
Great hikes locally and further afield
The historic buildings date back to 1630 and house 10 double rooms and a twin. The rooms are very tastefully decorated in traditional Norwegian style with painted wooden floors, colourful wooden bed frames and William Morris-esque wallpaper. The bathrooms are small but contemporary with excellent showers, apart from the two larger corner rooms that have baths and enjoy views over the fjord.
The communal areas of the main house are filled with antiquities that tell the history of the past nine generations who have successfully run the hotel. The salon makes for a cosy evening by the fire with a glass of red wine, or a well deserved cup of tea and cinnamon bun after an energetic day’s hiking.
The food is an important aspect at Walaker Hotel where they serve a set, four course dinner each night using local produce as far as possible, and breakfast includes delicious apples and homemade jams made from plums and berries that grow around the hotel grounds. The dining room is reminiscent of a smart, turn of the twentieth century restaurant, adding to the antique and historic feel of the hotel without feeling outdated.
The gardens surrounding the hotel and are dotted with tables and chairs where you can enjoy tea in the sun in the summer and marvel at the incredible vista of mountains and fjord. The area has ample walking trails to suit all levels and is within easy reach of the Urnes Stave church, a small beach popular with the locals, and to Fjaerland and Jostedal glaciers.
