Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Room 6 is our top pick, overlooking the pretty church spire that gave the hotel its name. Enjoy a glass of local Pinot Noir from the comfort of your stylish Eames chair.

Immerse yourself in the vast and untouched wilderness of Doubtful Sound, the second largest fiord in Fiordland National Park. You can just join in for the day, although many seem to opt for an overnight cruise.

The Spire Queenstown is a family friendly hotel and can prepare baby food as well as providing a children's room service menu. Inter-connecting rooms, children's books, DVDs and games are available as is babysitting. Queenstown offers families plenty of entertainment from skiing, farm visits, riding, rafting and the skyline gondola to name but a few.

The Spire's ski concierge understand that in the winter there are a lot of things that need arranging before you can enjoy your time in the snow - they can order skis/snowboards and hire any equipment for you in advance and it will be waiting for you on arrival at the hotel. They can also sort out passes, ski guides and ski lessons.

The sister property to Eichardts, so run to the same high standards of service, The Spire is just a 2 minute walk from Eichardts, set back from the lake. The hotel has a slightly younger and funkier feel to it, with dcor to match. The rooms are spacious and with just 10 suites, it has a very boutique and personal feel to it. The balconies in the four Spire Suites are a great size and catch the morning sun, filling the rooms with light. Just next door to the hotel is the trendy No5 Church Lane restaurant, which is a lively and fun place to dine. It is right in the centre of town, so there are numerous dining and drinking options for you to choose from during your stay here

A boutique option, modern and with a young and lively feel to it. The rooms are particularly spacious, all with comfortable seating areas and a large open space outside where you can enjoy your breakfast in the sun. The large trees in the gardens outside make them incredibly private and give the balconies a rather tropical feel. A few of the rooms have partial lake views but not all do. The hotel is set back from the lake side so some have garden and city views. This is a very comfortable place to stay and so conveniently located for the fun on offer in Queenstown.

Each amazing suite at The Spire is an exercise is stunning attention to detail and style - each one costing NZ$100,000 to furnish! They are very trendy in a very comfortable way with B&O telephones, possum throws on the beds, Eames chairs and Phillipe Starck lamps. The beds are huge and utterly comfortable and each room has the most subtle lighting and superior linens, there's even a pillow menu! The lay out of the property allows The Spire to do excellent configurations for families and they enjoy having younger guests to stay and will look after their every need as well as those of Mum and Dad.

The Spire has an incredibly chic and welcoming atmosphere and you feel incredibly spoilt throughout your stay, it is definitely one of my favourite properties in the heart of Queenstown and I would highly recommend the property if you are a design buff or simply like a little modern luxury interspersed with the more traditional New Zealand lodges.
