Benguerra Lodge is an unassuming lodge on an unspoilt island off the coast of Mozambique, providing rustic luxury and charm with the superb service from &Beyond. Accommodation comprises ten casinhas, two cabanas, one exclusive 3 bedroom villa.
Benguerra is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which broke away from the mainland thousands of years ago. The island is approximately 11km long by 5.5 km wide, and lies 14km offshore. It is famous for its unspoiled white beaches, remarkable dive sites and excellent fishing (subject to a strict “catch & release” policy).
Some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling in the world is available off Benguerra’s shores with the surrounding coral reefs rich in sea life. The archipelago is one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered Dugong. A pale, voluptuous sea mammal fabled to have made bygone mariners believe in mermaids.
Inland, Benguerra Island comprises forest, savannah, freshwater lakes and wetland eco-systems that sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora. Fresh water crocodiles can be found in the three lakes, bearing testimony to the island’s mainland past. The island, which is home to approximately 140 bird species, was declared a National Park in 1971.
Benguerra Lodge and the Bazaruto National Park strive, in conjunction with the community and other related parties, to maintain the diverse and pristine environment for the enjoyment of future generations. Since the inception of the Lodge in 1988, its owners, management and staff have been intricately involved in the ecological preservation and conservation of the island’s heritage. Part of the &Beyond group, you can expect beautiful rustic-luxe style, superb service and fabulous food. The local staff are immensely friendly and always willing to help. There are ten casinhas, two cabanas and a three bedroom Casa de Familia with it's own private pool. All of the rooms are the epitome of Robinson Crusoe chic, with soft fronds of thatch overlapping from the roof, beautiful four poster beds and decor with a mix of ocean blues and African artwork.
There are three different types of accommodation to chose from at Benguerra Island Lodge. Each one is individually designed and decorated and include ten Casinhas, two Cabanas and a Casa Familia, which is made up of three bedrooms. All have en-suite bathrooms with outdoor showers and generous bathtubs, as well as private decks with plunge pool. The rooms embrace Benguerra’s unique blend of safari chic and Arabic style.
Children of any age are welcome at Benguerra Island Lodge. There is a three bedroom villa which works very well for families and extra beds can be accommodated in the casinha room category if parents want to share with one child.
Benguerra Lodge has an expansive lounge, bar and dining room – all with large wooden decks and indoor and outdoor seating areas. By the spacious reception area is the gift shop selling local handicrafts. There is also a swimming pool and small spa.
Benguerra takes great pride in personal service and offers an experienced guide to accompany guests, whether snorkelling on the Archipelago’s magnificent reefs, or casting a fly from a boat.
There is so much to discover on and around the Island, on foot or in an open Landrover. Activities include: snorkelling, sea kayaking, dhow cruises, landrover Island tours and village visits.
Benguerra is a paradise for both experienced and novice snorkellers and scuba divers. To encourage visitors to enjoy the pristine reefs, a fully equipped dive centre with dive instructor has been set up. There are numerous dive venues available, including the superb Two-Mile Reef.
For experienced riders it is possible to explore this remote island on horse-back with Mozambique Horse Safaris based at Benguerra Lodge.

With &Beyond you know you are going to get something special and this lodge is no exception. After generous canaps whilst you sit around the fire pit swapping stories of your day you will still be tempted enough to devour the freshly caught seafood cooked to perfection for supper. The activities at Benguerra Island Lodge are all included so it really makes for a fantastic holiday for couples and families alike. Try diving on a near by reef, snorkle looking out for turtles and the elusive dugongs or even try a horse ride around the island on one of the 104 horses that escaped from Zimbabwe.

The latest gem in the &Beyond stable has been beautifully and sensitively restored so the thatched casitas line a beautiful white sandy shore with the azure seas of Benguerra Island lapping gently on the shore in front of your delightful home. Spacious thatched rooms with air-conditioning and louvered shutters to catch the island breezes all have their own pools and deck which is a perfect spot to have breakfast or lunch whilst watching the dancing waves on the sand. Walk along the beach at sunset to have a drink at their beautiful Dhow Bar on the beach and then dine on the sand with the waves lapping in. Johan the manager is charming and his team will come up with wonderful excursions to snorkel, picnic on deserted beaches, climb the dunes and even ride on the beach. A dream of a hotel a mere helicopter flight away from Vilanculos and a hop skip and a jump from the Kruger National Park or Johannesburg.

We couldn't have been happier with our choice, the staff were charming, food outstanding we felt very welcomed and appreciated. I would say they undersell themselves as a resort it is so good.
Camilla was extremely helpful, she even recommended exactly which casita to stay in - and she was right!
