The rainy season on the Kenyan Coast is generally during May and June. So from July onward the weather is gradually getting hotter and dryer until March/April when it reaches the high 90's (over40 degrees C). Christmas/New Year is generally considered the peak season and the weather is lovely then with constant sunshine and gentle off shore breezes. If you want clear seas for diving then make your trip after August/Sept.
Situated on the glorious white sands of Tiwi Beach, south of Mombasa, Olerai Beach House is a wonderful, welcoming private house perfect for families or groups of friends traveling together - with the beach a mere fifty meters away!
Olerai Beach House is situated in a lovely spot - slightly elevated above Tiwi Beach with beautiful mature gardens and a pathway leading straight down to the beach, the house offers large, open-plan accommodation in four main bedrooms and a wonderful, open-plan upstairs sleeping area. Behind the main house there is a separate cottage. It is an easy fifteen minutes drive from Ukunda airport, or an hour's drive from the main Mombasa Airport.
The house is family owned and extremely comfortable and welcoming - a large deck in front has comfortable sofas to while away the days, and there is a bar and fridge which can be stocked with all manner of drinks. The lawn is perfect for games but the house's crowning glory is the amazing swimming pool. Reached by a curving path or steps down from the side of the house, the pool is large, cool and inviting, and situated in the shade of towering trees. The pool is great fun, and boasts its own "slide" carved out of the rock, for hours of entertainment! Around the pool are the natural "coral caves" which are fun for children to explore, and the perfect venue for a dinner party after the children have gone to bed.
Olerai Beach House comes with its own chef and housekeeper, gardener and pool attendant - there is also a night-watchman and a security guard. It is usually booked on a full board basis, to include drinks, although it is also available on a self catering basis with the chef at your disposal. The food is excellent - surf-fresh fish is brought to the house by local fishermen fresh from their night-time fishing trips, and the fruit and vegetables and locally grown and excellent. It is the perfect spot to relax on the beach after an exciting safari in Kenya.
There are four large double rooms, each with their own bathroom and shower. The rooms are all tastefully decorated with views over the Indian Ocean. There is further space for children in the open planned upstairs area of the house, with another four beds, sharing a bathroom, plus a small cottage set behind the house if extra space is needed.
Olerai Beach house is fully staffed with an excellent chef/manager, housekeeper, gardener and pool attendant plus a night-watchman and security guard. They also provide a private driver with vehicle.

I absolutely loved Olerai when I visited briefly in March 2012. It's a sprawling, quirky family house with a lovely lawn at the back stretching right down to the pristine sandy beach and azure ocean beyond, dotted with palm trees. The house is big and welcoming, decorated in traditional style and feels incredibly homely - a huge main area opens out onto the back deck, generously accessorised with lots of comfortable squishy sofas. Everything you need is here - a kitchen complete with staff and a large bar with a fridge that can be filled with any drinks requested.
But it's the swimming pool and "bat-cave" that really enthralled me! The swimming pool is every child's dream - huge and inviting, and with its own "slide" which leads straight into the water! There are various inflatables around for children to use and the pool is clear and warm. Set aside from the pool is an incredible "cave" structure - open to the skies but with a separate cave to one side with an enclosed roof. It's really quite quirky and as the owner told me, a perfect spot for romantic suppers, lit by the light of spirit lanterns.
I'd hugely recommend Olerai for families - it's a wonderful, welcoming place with lots to do and a spectacular vista across the ocean.
