Solio Lodge is open all year, apart from November when the lodge is closed for the rains. The main season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot.
Northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.

Solio Lodge is built on a 19,000-acre game reserve between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, which currently has 70 black and 150 white rhinos; a further 152 have been relocated since the reserve was fenced off from Solio cattle ranch in 1974. With the export of white rhino now banned in Kenya, owner Ed Parfet decided to build a lodge to help finance the increased security - including extra rangers - necessary to protect those he still has on the property (worryingly, poaching is on the increase). Happily, his choice of business partners were Mikey and Tanya Carr-Hartley, fourth-generation Kenyans whose collection of lodges and camps includes Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. In keeping with Solio's prelapsarian setting - sun-baked plains full of grazers, emerald-green swamp shaded by shimmery fever trees - the six-cottage lodge is a joy to behold, with organically inspired, made-in-Kenya, boldly contemporary interiors that are spacious and comfortable (the bathrooms have open fires, stand-alone tubs, wet-room-style monsoon showers, and plate-glass windows overlooking the grassland). Over at the mess, manager Ava Paton supervises the delightful staff, a garden planted with herbs and vegetables, and a pair of crowned cranes known as Kate and William. Day and night game-drives can be followed by an in-room massage beside a cedarwood fire.
When to go - September, October and January to March. Take a jumper: the lodge is 2,000 metres above sea level and it can get cold.
