Safaris Unlimited Riding Safaris run all year round excluding April, May and November. The tourist season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot. Northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.

Safaris Unlimited Riding Safaris are bespoke Kenyan riding trips through the Maasai Mara plains and the highlands of Laikipia. There are a limited number of fixed trips a year and guide, Gordie Church also offers private riding safaris for guests.

Safaris Unlimited offer two different riding itineraries in some of the most game-rich wildernesses in Africa. There are a limited number of fixed departure riding safaris each year which tend to take place during the migration period and Gordie also runs private riding safaris throughout the year. The nine day safaris take groups of 2 to 12 guests and the private safaris are adjusted to suit the riding ability and desires of each group. The Safaris Unlimited ranch has 30 horses to choose from and Felicia, the manager ensures that there is a horse to suit every riders ability on each safari trip.

The horses are all well-tempered, fit and sure-footed and they are all used to being amongst big game. All riders, however, must be confident at all paces and riding fit - the Safaris Unlimited Riding Safaris are not recommended for beginners.

All of the safaris are led by experienced guide Gordie Church. Gordie has over 25 years experience working in the bush and his stories, experiences and knowledge all add to this unique safari experience. Felicia Collie is the manager of the safari horses and accompanies Gordie on every safari. Her extensive knowledge of the Unlimited Safari horses means that each guest can be well paired with their steed.

The two itineraries both feature fantastic scenery and bountiful wildlife. One takes place in the Maasai Mara at the height of the great wildebeest migration and you will ride between three different campsites on you journey and cross the Mara River on horseback at one of the wildebeest crossing points. The Laikipia ride takes place in the central highlands of Kenya which stretch from the snow capped peaks of mount Kenya to the great rift Valley in the west. The combination of abundant wildlife and exceptional scenery provides the basis for this route.

The Safaris Unlimited mobile tents are simply furnished and provide guests with a traditional, African safari experience. The nights can get quite cool but warm feather duvets and hot water bottles are provided. Each tent has its own canvas loo unit and traditional bucket shower which is situated behind the tent. The campsites are always positioned in fantastic locations; under a shaded canopy of trees or on the banks of the river.

Safaris Unlimited will accept children but they will have to be strong, competent riders and we would not recommend the riding safari for children under the age of twelve.

The main mess tent is simply decorated with a large dining table for enjoying the full English breakfasts in the mornings and elegant three course meals in the evenings. All of the meals are freshly prepared in the camp over open fires and there is delicious freshly made bread served every morning. Guests can help themselves to a selection of drinks throughout the day from the well-stocked bush bar. The tents are lit by solar lights and guests are provided with hurricane lanterns as well. To charge any cameras or batteries, you will have to bring the appropriate leads to plug into the safari vehicle 12V cigarette lighter socket. Laundry is done daily, except on moving days.

Riding is of course the main activity. The horses are a mixture of Arab crossbreds and thoroughbreds and range between 14hh - 17hh. All of the horses are good-natured, fit well-schooled and responsive and Safaris Unlimited will ensure that each rider is suitably matched with their horse before setting off. English general-purpose saddles and French cavalry saddles are used and all the horses tend to go best in a simple snaffle bridle. Saddlebags are provided for guests to carry cameras, rain gear and water.

Guests will also be able to go on morning, afternoon or night game drives as well and can always choose to spend the day in the safari vehicle if they do not wish to ride.

  • Game drives in the Maasai Mara

Exploring this iconic ecosystem in an adapted, open 4x4 safari vehicle with your professional safari guide is one of the best ways to get up close to the huge volume and wide diversity of wildlife in the Mara.

  • Private Safari Guide and Game Drive Vehicle

Ensure an exclusive and totally tailored safari experience by booking a private safari guide and game drive vehicle. A private guide gives you the flexibility to go where you want, when you want. If you have specific interests this is an absolute must.

  • The Great Migration

The Maasai Mara is famous for being home to one of nature’s most spectacular events: the Great Migration. Millions of wildebeest cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Mara in search of better grazing.

  • Walking in the Maasai Mara

Exploring the African bush from outside a safari vehicle is a wonderful experience. Get away from the noise of the 4x4 and, accompanied by your professional safari guide, begin to pick up on the smaller details of the African bush.
