Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

For a small country, Jordan has an extraordinary range of climates. The best time to visit climate-wise is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the daytime temperatures aren't too extreme. April is probably the best month, when temperatures are warm and wildflowers are in bloom. March can be cold and rainy in the north but is balmy by the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea.

Dana Guesthouse is a simple but charming property, perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the stunning Dana Nature Reserve in Jordan. The hotel is locally run and provides a convenient base for the night before starting treks into the nature reserve.

The Dana Nature Reserve is one of Jordan's hidden gems, and a great place to get more off the beaten track versus the more popular sites such as Petra and Wadi Rum. As the area is protected, the accommodation choices are limited, but whilst Dana Guesthouse is basic, the hotel offers incredible views, and warm Arabic hospitality.

There are 24 rooms, which are simply furnished. The entry level rooms have a shared bathroom, but there are 15 Deluxe Rooms which have their own bathrooms. Each room has a wonderful terrace overlooking a 1,000-metre drop to the basin of the Wadi Dana. The sunsets across the far side of the Wadi make this an exceptionally beautiful place to be in the evenings. Dining is fairly simple, but hearty, and the public areas of the property have a welcoming, intimate atmosphere.

Dana Guesthouse is eco-friendly, and the money from the hotel goes towards the local community, and most of the staff are from the surrounding area.

The Dana Guest House offers 24 Rooms. We recommend the Deluxe Rooms, as these are the only rooms which have private bathrooms, and they also have central heating and wall-mounted fans. The rooms are very basic but comfortable. The highlight is the wonderful views from the balcony.

Children are welcome to come and stay at Dana Guest House. However, there are no specific facilities available for them.

Facilities include a centrally located dining room and sitting area, and terrace. Traditional and tasty homemade food is served. This is usually a buffet but if there is low occupancy a set menu is served.

Close by is the small village of Dana, which is worth a wander around, and next door to Dana Guesthouse is a small handicrafts workshop and nature reserve museum. Explore the Dana Nature Reserve which is home to many bird species including the Griffon vulture, Bonelli`s eagle, Sinai rosefinch, Tristram`s grackle and the fan-tailed Raven. Scott Dunn recommends trekking through Wadi Dana to Feynan Eco Lodge, which takes around five hours. We can organise a guide and packed lunches.

This is definitely not the most luxurious option in Jordan, but then if you are staying there it is for location and the most magnificent views. It is probably better for more adventurous types, especially as you will be walking down through Wadi Dana the next day. Some rooms have bunkbeds, which guests do need to be aware of, but there are also double and twin rooms.

Staying at Dana Guest House is very much more about the location guesthouse and the experience rather than the luxuries of the accommodation. All the rooms have plenty of character but are basic. All guests are immediately made to feel very welcome and a stay at the guest house includes a delicious mezze based, Arabic meal with all the other guests. After dinner we were all encouraged, not that much encouragement was needed, to watch the sunset over the impressive mountainous backdrop. From Dana guesthouse I had the opportunity to walk to Feynan Eco Lodge.

  • Dana Nature Reserve Trekking

There are various hikes on offer within the Dana Nature Reserve. You will be accompanied by a local guide, who is knowledgeable on flora and fauna indigenous to the area. The scenery is beautiful with dramatic views.

  • Dana Village Walk

Dana village is one of Jordan's most picturesque communities, overlooking the vast Wadi Dana. Boasting distinctive Jordanian character and plenty of souk-style shops, wandering these streets is well worth the time.

  • Hike from Dana to Feynan

A beautiful Wadi Dana trail leads from the small village of Dana to the lodge of Feynan, taking approximately 6 hours downhill. Your driver will transport your luggage from Dana to Feynan.

  • Kerak Castle

Built in 1161 by the Crusaders, Kerak is a perfect example of mediaeval castle design. The castle is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways. Its most famous occupant was Reynald de Chatillon, who had a reputation for treachery and brutality.

  • Madaba

Known as the City of Mosaics, Madaba is most famous for the Church of St George which contains a superb mosaic map of the Holy Land dating from 560AD. There is an interesting visitors' centre which explains the map in more detail.

  • Mt Nebo

According to the Bible, in the book of Deuteronomy, Mount Nebo is where the prophet Moses was shown the Promised Land for the Hebrew people. Today, the site contains a church and impressive mosaic collection.

  • Nawatef Trail

The guided Nawatef Trail introduces you to the best of the Dana Nature Reserve without being too strenuous.

  • Shaq al Reesh Trail

You will be driven to Al-Barrah area to begin your moderate-to-difficult hike on the circular Shaq al Reesh Trail for stunning views of Jordan's backcountry.

  • Showbak Castle

Showbak is an isolated Crusader castle, located around an hour north of Petra. Whilst it is more dilapidated than other castles such as Kerak, the setting is very dramatic; perched on a hillside and offering extensive views of the surrounding area.
