Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Isolated from much of India by the Western Ghats, the climate of Kerala & Karnataka is tropical and as a result of the mountain ranges the area isn’t as dry as much of India. The best time to visit is from January through to April. While there can be the occasional light showers these are just a prelude of the wet weather to come. The weather is generally hot and humid during this early summer. The monsoon season arrives in early June and thus can wash out July and August. September is much more humid as a result of the rainy season, and the fall can be dry but with the humidity this makes it feel quite warm. There can be a little rain in the night in October and November. The temperatures cool down and the humidity lets up as winter comes in around December, with this season lasting until February when the dry spring returns. Winter can be a pleasant time to visit, especially if you’re looking to head off the beach and explore the rest of this Indian land of mystery.

Insider's View

An early morning walk along the beach to inspect the fishermen's catches, the best start to the day.

Not an ideal destination if you smoke; smoking is banned.

We had the best Keralan fish curry of our stay here and the menu was small but good for all tastes.

The in house tailor is wonderful - never seen this in any other property not just for yoga but will copy your favourite outfit in four hours.

The hotel employs all local villagers and rains them in hotel management and service.

The Lotus Boat for a real peaceful backwater experience.

Neeleshwar Hermitage is a gorgeous beach hotel located in a quiet, unspoilt corner of Northern Kerala. With a glorious peaceful atmosphere, Neeleshwar is a perfect destination for relaxation or a base to explore this wonderful part of India.

Neeleshwar Hermitage was built in accordance with the architectural principles of Kerala Vastu and has a number of thatched cottages, with either sea or garden views. Neeleshwar may be a seven hour journey by train from Cochin but it is worth every second. The property is a hidden tropical gem set in palm groves and on a lagoon next to an unspoilt white sandy beach. This luxurious boutique property is small and comprises of 18 thatched cottages with large bedrooms and outside Kerala style bathrooms. The Property uses local artisans who make the furniture in each room and the property has an amazing library courtesy of Alistair Shearer, a British Historian and novelist and some of these rare books may be borrowed whilst staying at Neelshwar. Morning yoga classes are complimentary and there is no excuse that you have nothing to wear as the hotel has a resident tailor that will run you up a yoga outfit in four house made to measure ! As well as this the hotel has a houseboat called the LOTUS HOuseboat which has been made to very high specifications and can be used for day, evening or night cruises. Many guests end their holiday with a three day cruise on the Lotus Houseboat which means you are three hours from the airport when you disembark. the good news Kunnar will soon be given an international license which means that you can fly in or out of Kunnar making Neeleshwar that much closer.

Neeleshwar Hermitage, 'for the rest of your life'. A serenely elegant hotel nestled under the coconut palms on the shores of the Arabian Sea. The friendly staff greeted me with the ritual Tilak mark on my forehead and a delightfully smelling garland of white jasmine flowers. The airconditioned accommodation is in very private detached thatched cottages adorned with locally carved wood. The open air restaurants provide a selection of traditional Keralan cuisine with an emphasis on health and wellbeing. Close to the shore at the Meenakshi Fish restaurant I enjoyed the locally caught fish of the day. The authentic Ayurveydic Massage should not be missed.

  • Backwaters - Experience Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a village based on the edge of Lake Vembanadu. The village is beautifully laid out over a number of different picturesque islands and is a wonderful example of how people live in the backwaters.

  • Periyar - Boating at Lake Periyar

Boating in the splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river adds to the charm of the park. Spot some fascinating wildlife from the boat including animals coming to drink on the lake.
