Commissioned by Frederick II, “The Great,” between 1745 and 1747, this Rococo masterpiece was conceived as a small summer retreat, a palace “sans souci,” without worries. Later, King Frederick Wilhelm IV extended and enhanced the wings in the 19th century, creating an elegant dialogue between history and grandeur. Stroll the palace gardens, where fountains, terraces, and sculpted greenery weave together to form one of Europe’s most celebrated landscapes.
Just a short distance away lies the New Palace (Neues Palais), a monument to Prussian ambition. Built in 1763, this Baroque palace spans 200 rooms, four grand ballrooms, and even a private theatre, designed purely to impress visitors with the might and sophistication of the monarchy. Here, the scale of power and the artistry of the period come alive in every gilded room and sweeping staircase.
Beyond the palaces, Potsdam’s streets and squares tell stories of its rich cultural tapestry. Admire the remaining city gates, Brandenburg Gate, Nauen Gate, and Jaegertor (“Hunter’s Gate”), each a sentinel of history. Wander the Dutch Quarter, the Russian colony of Alexandrowka, and the Alter Markt, where the city castle, stables, Nikolai Church, and old town hall stand as enduring symbols of the city’s heritage.
Your tour will also uncover more intimate historical vignettes: the Spy-Bridge, where clandestine Cold War secrets were exchanged; Villa Liebermann, a haven of artistic brilliance; and the infamous Wannsee Conference House, where the course of history took a dark turn.
