Tulou
Set amongst rolling hills of tea and rice plantations, the Fujian Tulou is a series of traditional multi-story earth houses constructed between 15th and 20th centuries. They are known for their architectural design of inward looking floor plans to promote communal living, social cohesiveness and defence against invaders.
Built with mud, wood, tiles and bamboo, the Hakka earth houses blends harmoniously with the environment and kept well-maintained till this day. There are several Tulou communities in Fujian, each with its own subtle charm and differences. 46 of these properties are now designated UNESCO sites that still house the locals and offer an interesting insight into their daily lives.
