From the subtropical lowlands in the south up to glacier-capped mountains in the north, Yunnan is a province of extremes. The climate varies so much across this vast and diverse area, that it has given rise to an ancient Chinese saying: “You can enjoy all four seasons on the same mountain, with each just a few miles from the next”. Generally speaking, most of Yunnan province is mild in winter and cool in summer, with large variances in temperature occurring across the day. Mornings can start with a wintery chill, and warm up to 25°C by lunchtime. Spring and Autumn are mild and pleasant and the best times to visit Yunnan, despite May being the rainiest month of the year. For snow-capped mountains and dramatic alpine scenes, the winter months of November to January can be spectacular.

I really liked the location of the hotel which is very central at the entrance to the cobbled streets of old town Lijang. Its ideal if you want to eat locally in one of the many excellent restaurants in town and to explore on foot. The first thing you notice when you enter the hotel is the huge glass window at the end of the lobby. It looks out over the hotel gardens and rooms but behind are the beautiful snow capped mountains. The hotel is quite spread out and made up of a number of small houses each split into two or three separate rooms with an internal courtyard which gives you some shared out door space to relax in the afternoons. I found the dcor of the rooms to be quite dark with lots of wood and dark reds and ambers on the walls but it is quite atmospheric. There is a huge indoor swimming pool making it a great choice for families.

As soon as you walk into the hotel you are hit by the spectacular views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain through the enormous floor to ceiling glass windows. The design of the hotel is brilliant as it sympathetically incorporates the local decor and design of the area whilst also maintaining a very contemporary and modern feel.
