From the subtropical lowlands in the south up to glacier-capped mountains in the north, Yunnan is a province of extremes. The climate varies so much across this vast and diverse area, that it has given rise to an ancient Chinese saying: “You can enjoy all four seasons on the same mountain, with each just a few miles from the next”. Generally speaking, most of Yunnan province is mild in winter and cool in summer, with large variances in temperature occurring across the day. Mornings can start with a wintery chill, and warm up to 25°C by lunchtime. Spring and Autumn are mild and pleasant and the best times to visit Yunnan, despite May being the rainiest month of the year. For snow-capped mountains and dramatic alpine scenes, the winter months of November to January can be spectacular.

On a hill located directly above the old town of Lijang sits the newly built Amandayan. It has the most fantastic views across the rooftops of the town below and as the evening draws in and the town begins to come alive with lights and music it feels extremely special. The hotel is newly built but has been done so very considerately with lots of local stone and wood. The rooms which are split into various courtyards are simple and perfect in the true Aman aesthetic. All clean lines and high ceilings with a large and beautiful bathroom adjacent. There is a small outdoor pool within the courtyard that holds the spa and a bath house with huge cedar tubs to relax in after a hard day trekking or doing yoga out on the hotels pavilion. I loved breakfast which s taken in the main lobby and lounge area. There was a local musician playing a wonderful sort of harp as we tucked in to fabulous fresh fruit and muesli. Amandayan isnt just a hotel in Lijang it is a destination in itself and a truly special place that I will always remember.

Amandayan is the newest luxury addition to Lijiang and has a brilliant location right above the old town. It is so convenient as you can just potter down the lane and be in the heart of this charming old town and then when you want to can return to your perch surveying the city below. At night the city does come alive with plenty of restaurants and bars which belt out local classics but luckily these die down at 11pm so that we were still able to get plenty of beauty sleep. Even though the property was still in soft opening when I stayed the hotel ran like clockwork and if there were any tiny hiccups these were all dealt with seamlessly and with charming service. It was definitely a real treat to stay here.
