Winter Exploration of Akan
Lake Akan, Japan
Discover Eastern Hokkaido as you visit Mt Iou, Lake Mashu, known as the 'foggy lake' and immerse in the culture of the Ainu at the Ainu Kotan.
After breakfast, visit Mt Iou – an active volcano also known as the Naked Mountain. Be amazed by the sight of over 1,000 fumaroles from the volcano as well as the yellow sulpur produced from the volcanic gases.
Drive to the scenic Lake Mashu, known as “foggy lake” - one of the most transparent lakes in the world! Proceed to Lake Akan and visit the Ainu Kotan- a village of the indigenious people of Hokkaido, then known as Ezo. Enjoy a great variety of authentic Ainu cuisines and cafes, folk art, jewelry and more as you learn about the history and culture of the Ainu.
If time permits, join in the Akan Frozen Lake Festival (mid Feb- mid March) - an event of winter fun, snow sculptures and fireworks!
