Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.

All bathrooms have a bath and the honeymoon suite has a romantic outdoor shower. There is also a family suite which has two bedrooms and a living area. Finally there is a treehouse, with a large four poster bed with mosquito nets, comfy chairs and a bathroom with a copper rolltop bath. A sleepout here is a magical and romantic experience, with sundowner drinks and a private picnic dinner, and waking to enjoy the sun rise over the island.

Children of all ages are welcome at Rubondo Island although children over the age of 6 are most likely to have an enjoyable stay here. There are no babysitting facilities or kids clubs, but plenty of child-focussed activities on offer here, as well as a family banda and a swimming pool. Game-drives are guaranteed with a private safari vehicle for families of four or more, and other activities include nature walks, spoor tracking, making plaster moulds of animal footprints and bush skills.

The bar and restaurant area is set within a rocky outcrop overlooking the lake where you can witness the most spectacular sunsets. There is also a small library area with a selection of books and games. Cool off in the pool after a morning of activities and try to catch a glimpse of the crocodiles and hippo in the lake below you.

Rubondo offers a unique range of fun and exciting activities. There are daily game drives through the thick forest and experienced guides will search for elephant, bushbuck, giraffe and multiple primate species resident to the island. Trek the wild chimpanzees whose ancestors were rescued from various zoos and circuses in the sixties and brought to the island which acted as a sanctuary. (NB. The sightings of the chimps are still very intermittent as the habituation process is underway, so sightings are not guaranteed). Guests can also fish for the Nile Perch and try and beat the current record of 105 kg! And for a true adventure, spend a night sleeping out in their magical treehouse, surrounded by the night time sounds of the forest - truly unforgettable. Once guests have had their fill of adventure, they can take a relaxed sunset cruise around the island.
