Visit a Cinnamon Plantation
A private tour of a beautiful 25-acre working cinnamon plantation, led by the English owner who has restored the plantation. This experience is for travellers who want to learn about growing cinnamon, preparing quills, and making artisan cinnamon oil.
Ride on a serene boat ride to Cinnamon Island, an immersive experience with a family deeply entrenched in the traditional art of hand-rolling cinnamon sticks. As the boat glides through the tranquil waters, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. Upon reaching the island, you will be greeted by the only family that lives on this island, who invites you into their aromatic world of cinnamon craftsmanship. In a mud hut, surrounded by bundles of cinnamon bark, witness the meticulous process of hand-rolling each stick with precision and care, a tradition passed down through generations.
After the enlightening cinnamon crafting session, the family will extend their hospitality with a delightful local lunch. From aromatic cinnamon-infused curries to sweet treats highlighting the spice's warmth, every bite is a celebration of the island's culinary heritage. Our host will educate you with insights into the significance of cinnamon in their lives, both as a livelihood and a cultural treasure. This unforgettable journey will deepen your appreciation for the art of cinnamon production with a taste of the genuine warmth and richness of the local community's traditions.
It is designed for couples, families, and small groups of friends with plenty of opportunities to try things out for yourself. The tour takes you by foot from the Cinnamon Hut to the Oil Shed and then 50 metres up the hill by cart to the plantation house where the owners offer refreshments and spectacular views over Weligama Bay to the south and the rolling jungle to the north. If requested, the owners will host a private lunch for you, with many of the ingredients grown on the land and all of them home-cooked.
