December and January are high season, and not recommended, since the glacier trips are busy. September, October and March are the best months, when there are fewer crowds, and the weather can still be beautifully mild. Bear in mind, though, that weather on the glacier is completely unpredictable, since the winds coming over the Andes, are constantly changing. November to April brings the best weather, downpours are rare, and there’s usually enough sun to get fabulous photographs of the ice, with bright sunshine most days.
In March and April, Autumn colours are spectacular, as the lenga on upper slopes of the mountains turns scarlet. The whole region is closed for winter June to August, when weather makes the area very inhospitable.
Located on a hillside with splendid views over the Beagle Channel and the world’s most southerly town, Altos Ushuaia is a comfortable and attractively priced hotel ideal before or after an expedition cruise or for exploring the wilds of Tierra del Fuego.
Surrounded by Patagonian forest, Altos Ushuaia is in a quiet location twenty minutes from central Ushuaia, but this is more than made up for by the amazing views the hotel has of the Beagle Chanel. The hotel’s 47 rooms and suites are tastefully decorated, and equipped with flat-screen cable TV and private bathrooms with showers. Suites contain spa baths and some of them also have private balconies.
Public areas at Altos Ushuaia include a large living room area with parquet floors, exposed stones and large windows which offer the same beautiful views, while the dining room offers tasty dishes such as locally caught king crab accompanied by Cape Horn beer from the world’s southernmost brewery. Staff are friendly and attentive, and if you want to get into town, an inexpensive taxi can quickly be arranged.
Altos Ushuaia is an excellent option if you want somewhere quiet and peaceful for a couple of days before or after travelling on an expedition cruise to Antarctica or on one of the Australis boats to or from Punta Arenas in Chile, and the hotel’s location just 8 kilometres from Lapataia National Park make it an excellent base for exploring the astonishingly rugged scenery of Tierra del Fuego.
