October to April is generally the best time to visit, but the southern autumn (April and May) is often characterised by extraordinary leaf colours, and prices are usually lower at this time. Winter days are cold but often still.
Perfectly located close to the trailheads outside El Chaltén, the comfortable lodge-style Hostería El Pilar offers outstanding trekking opportunities in the formidable Fitzroy Ranges of Argentina's southern Patagonia.
Hostería El Pilar is a charming country lodge with just 10 rooms, all lovingly presided over by owner Marcelo Pagani and decorated in a style that is sensitive to the history and environment of this extraordinary mountain region. The food here is very good and uses seasonal produce from the abundant surrounding forests, cooked in a wood oven.
Trail paths lead to some of the most imposing vistas in the entire Andes range and for those that climb there are matchless opportunities to pit your wits against the famed granite towers of the Fitzroy peaks. Mountain biking, multi-day expeditions onto the Southern Patagonian Ice Sheet, float trips and boat trips onto Lago Viedma to see some of the region's glaciers can all be arranged.
Hostería El Pilar has 10 simple yet comfortable rooms, with en suite bathrooms. All rooms have a view to the mountains.
Children are welcome at Hostería El Pilar although there are no formal children's facilities and a stay here is more suited to older children due to the nature of the activities in the offer and the terrain.
Hostería El Pilar has a cosy lounge area with open fireplace, a bar and outdoor deck area, perfect for sitting out and admiring the views or for enjoying an Argentine asado, a traditional barbecue. There is also a restaurant specialising in international and local Patagonian cuisine.
El Chaltén is a true mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. Various activities are on offer for guests staying at Hostería El Pilar including trekking and climbing, mountain biking, kayaking (advanced), bird watching and sailing on Lake Viedma across to Glacier Viedma, where it is possible to go ice hiking, using crampons and with the assistance of expert guides.
Seventeen kilometers (10 miles) from El Chaltn, Hostera El Pilar is isolated, but with lovely, peaceful surroundings. The yellow-walled and red-roofed El Pilar was once an estancia; now it's tastefully and artistically decorated with just enough detail to look great without distracting you from the outdoors. The lounge has a few couches and a fireplace, and it's a comfy spot in which to hang out and read a book. Rooms are simple but attractive, with peach walls, comfortable beds, and sunlight that streams through half-curtained windows. Superior rooms are all doubles and have bigger bathrooms. Transfers from El Chaltn are included. Guests normally take their meals at the hotel's restaurant, which serves great cuisine. The hotel offers guided excursions, and it's located next to several trail heads.
Get up close to one of the world’s most famous glaciers on an unforgettable boat trip to Perito Moreno. This staggering ice form is viewed from extensive platforms which offer far-reaching views across the glacier to the snow-capped mountains beyond.
Hostería El Pilar is located 17km from El Chaltén, overlooking the Fitzroy mountain range and surrounded by the Andean-Patagonia forest, in the south of Argentina.
