Like the rest of Malaysia, Sabah’s climate is hot and humid. Expect temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s throughout the lowlands. The state’s rainfall averages about 300cm annually and though it rains throughout the year, the heaviest rainfall generally occurs between October and January. At higher elevations the temperature is refreshingly cool, dropping to colder temperatures at night. Mount Kinabalu has its own climate and, above 3500m, temperatures can drop to freezing.
Insider's View
To start planning your holiday to Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa
Description
Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa is conveniently located close to Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Borneo's Sabah state. This beachfront resort offers comfortable rooms and plenty of facilities, making it a pleasant stop for a night or two.
Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa has a beachfront location, but it is also only a few minutes away from Kota Kinabalu city centre, making this a great option for stop-overs or a break for a night or two during longer Borneo itineraries.
This large resort comprises 498 spacious and comfortable rooms and suites which are split into two wings; Kinabalu and Tanjung. Those in the Kinabalu wing have a more traditional design and offer views of either Mount Kinabalu or the ocean, whilst the rooms in the Tanjung wing are a bit more modern in design and face the south China Sea.
There are a number of restaurants to choose from, whether you want local Malay, the comfort of western food or Chinese. The Sunset Bar is also a great place to head to for pre-dinner cocktails, and guests can indulge in their sweet-tooth at the Cool Box Ice Cream Bar.
There is plenty to keep children entertained, with some wonderfully fun facilities including a Kids Club and Water Play Area, which features water slides and water battle stations with water balloon launchers. There is a 2,000 sqm swimming pool, which has a tapered shoreline for children and an adults-only section. The resort also has watersports and tennis courts, as well as an excellent spa.

Facilities
There is a wide range of dining choices at the resort. Coco-Joe's Bar & Grill takes influence from Borneo's heritage and guests can enjoy authentic Chinese dishes at Shang Palace. There is also an extensive buffet available at Cafe TATU. The Sunset Bar is a great spot for a drink or two, and for sweet treats, head to the Cool Box Ice Cream Bar.
The resort has a large pool, which has been designed to be child-friendly, but also has an adults-only section. As you might expect from a large resort, there are plenty of facilities, including tennis courts and a lovely spa.
Reviews

This is a very large resort with over 400 rooms so it does feel quite busy here but this does mean that there is lots going on and the facilities are very good. If you needed a night stopover in Kota Kinabulu, this is a good option as it is close to the airport. However, more than a night and you may be a little exhausted by the hectic atmosphere here! But it is great for families and children would absolutely love it here with a massive play pool park area, a fantastic kids club and generally all facilities are quite tailored to families. Rooms are lovely and spacious, opt for a seaview one to really make the most of your time here! The sunset is also pretty spectacular!
