Azumi Setoda Shikoku Island

This 19th century former residence and bathhouse on the western coast of Ikuchijima, has been beautifully renovated with meticulous craftsmanship and a minimalist aesthetic. Based on the concept of a ‘village hotel,’ a stay here is all about exploring the location and meeting the locals.

The building’s heritage is apparent in its curved roof tiles, high ceilings with exposed beams, textured shikkui plasterwork, sliding washi screens and smooth granite flooring. Glass walls overlook the delightfully landscaped courtyard garden. The design has been crafted to balance the elements and the sleek understated interiors create a soothing vibe, while the intuitive, friendly service and hospitality reflect the traditional ryokan experience.   The hotel has 18 Suites and 4 Duplexes, all evoking a feeling of deep serenity. The nine ground floor Niwa Rooms have low-level furniture, pale woods, restful white beds, small gardens and sliding washi paper screens, while the nine Suzumi Rooms on the upper floor, have balconies and rooftop views. Spacious bathrooms include deep rectangular bathtubs by the windows, for a soak with a view. Duplexes span both floors with guestrooms and gardens on the lower level, and a first-floor room with tatami mating and spacious balcony. In addition, the bathhouse Yubune, has 14 simply furnished budget rooms with showers.   Offering Japanese-Asian fusion cuisine, the dining room is a convivial space with communal tables, although there are several secluded dining spaces for more private dining. There is a strong focus on sourcing food locally, which is part of the hotel’s mission to forge deep bonds with and help revitalise local communities. The island was once a major shipping hub and in honour of this heritage, traditional Japanese ingredients are flavoured with Asian herbs and spices, to create a menu of ‘soul food,’ using local seasonal fare from seafood to citrus fruits. Breakfast is Japanese with local grilled fish, rice, nori seaweed, pickles, eggs, and miso soup.   While there is no spa, guests can relax at Yubune bathhouse, with a soak in a series of gender-segregated hot baths, beneath colourful tile artworks by Mai Miyake. There is also an aromatic sauna. With the hotel’s emphasis on community, both locals and guests are welcome. There are plans for a full spa and wellness centre in time.   The Azumi Setoda is on the Shimanami Kaido cycling route and cycling tours are a popular activity, along with lemon picking, fishing, and sunset cruising. Art lovers will also enjoy the location for exploring the unique art installations and museums dotted across the neighbouring islands.   Azumi Setoda is in the charming fishing village of Setoda on Ikuchijima, close to both the port and Shiomachi Shotengai, the main shopping street. Ikuchijima is one of thousands of small islands that populate the Seto Inland Sea, east of Hiroshima.
