The ski season in La Thuile follows a similar pattern to the nearby resorts of Val d'Isère and Chamonix. Its north-facing slopes means that snow quality can sometimes be better than in neighbouring resort of La Rosière late in the season. There are extensive snow making facilities to ensure reliable snow cover throughout the season from December to early April.

Insider's View

There's always something going on at Nira Montana. We especially like the wine tasting events.

Relax in the comfy bar area and ask the barman for a Raspberry Aperol Spritz or a Hugo - the perfect aperitif after a day on the slopes.

On a white out day visit the nearby town of Pré Saint Didier in the Aosta Valley and immerse yourself in the warm waters of their thermal baths. The source of the naturally warm waters spurt from the heart of a nearby ravine, just as they did 1000 years ago!

Take advantage of the two days in nearby Courmayeur, which are included in your 6 day ski pass. A free bus runs there or we can arrange a private taxi.

Make sure you arrive at the bar hungry and thirsty for aperitivo time from 6pm

Make sure you stop for a hot chocolate at Roxi Bar – arguably the best hot chocolate!

Montana Lodge is a luxury boutique hotel in La Thuile, bordering the Alps between Italy and France, with Mont Blanc as a backdrop. Mixing traditional alpine and contemporary design, and oozing Italian charm, it's perfect for families and long weekends.

Understated and friendly, La Thuile has its modern accommodation near the slopes, a little way from the traditional village. The modern lift system takes skiers to 160km of slopes with a good mix of nursery slopes, easy blues, challenging intermediate terrain and tricky blacks through the trees. The links to La Rosière in France and its proximity to Courmayeur and Chamonix means the Espace Bernardo hits the button for those who want to venture further afield. The slopes are relatively uncrowded, and the mountains dotted with great value restaurants serving incredible food. The easy transfers from Geneva and Italian airports means it works well for families and short breaks.

Montana Lodge & Spa is elegantly styled, with nature featuring heavily in every design detail, from the silver birch wall paper to the wooden furniture, it's a comfortable haven for skiers and non-skiers alike. The large lobby with its open fire, library and bar welcome skiers at the end of the day, and the huge terrace overlooking the Alps is a perfect lunch or hot chocolate stop. The rooms and suites are spacious and all have unrestricted views of the surrounding mountains. Stars Restaurant serves delicious, seasonal Italian food, focusing on regional specialties, and it's essential you try a pizza for lunch from the wood burning oven brought all the way from Florence. The hotel is particularly proud of its wine cellar, stocked with a healthy selection of vintage, local and international wines. The Spa is definitely worth a visit, with its range of bespoke holistic treatments, and comes with an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam bath, vitarium and Technogym.

For those seeking a refined resort and a luxurious hotel, La Thuile and the Montana Lodge & Spa are the perfect mix. With east facing slopes meaning excellent snow conditions and rarely ever a queue to the lift, you'll want to ski all day. But once you've taken off your skis, returning to the hotel is a joy.

With 160km of ski slopes and a range of nursery, intermediate and advanced runs, La Thuile offers open-space skiing on uncrowded slopes amid picturesque scenery. Espace San Bernardo, covering 80 pistes in France and Italy, links the French resort of La Rosière with La Thuile. One single international pass provides access to 38 efficient lifts carrying up to 58,000 people per hour. Skiing either side of the French and Italian borders, in the silent presence of Mont Blanc and Rutor glacier, is a breathtaking experience. Unusually, thanks to La Thuile’s state-of-the art lifts, skiers and snowboarders rarely encounter queues. The ski runs leave from an altitude of 1,450m in La Thuile, not far from Nira Montana, and reach over 2,600m in an area known as Belvedere. Run number 3 is a challenging black 73% gradient piste dedicated to Franco Berthod, an exceptional skier and coach born in La Thuile who made downhill skiing history. This run is approved for World Cup competitions.

Nordic skiing, heliskiing, free-riding and snow-kiting are popular around La Thuile and there are many opportunities for winter walks and guided snowshoe excursions.

The Montana is a little gem of a hotel in the small Italian ski village of La Thuile. The hotel is stylish and contemporary but still has a cosy ambiance to it. The staff are all lovely and couldnt have been more helpful, each evening and afternoon we were whisked down to the main lift station or there would be a car waiting for us at the bottom of the slopes ready to drop us back to the hotel.

The skiing was refreshingly quiet, I was aware La Thuile has a reputation for quiet slopes but didnt anticipate we wouldnt have to queue for lifts at all! We were able to cover the whole area in the short time we were there (2 days) as well as make it over to La Rossiere.

I always judge a hotel on its spa and the spa at Montana definitely rates highly, with three saunas / steam rooms, as well relaxation space and nice light pool area its a lovely place to unwind after a day on the slopes.

In terms of dining, the Stars Restaurant offers fine dining using local seasonal flavours and products. There are a few local, more traditional restaurants in the village which offer less formal food, a couple of them were superb and such good value compared to eating out in French resorts! The same goes for the mountain restaurants, if you know where to go there are some amazing lunch pit stops to refuel with a homemade pasta.

Overall I was surprised with the extensiveness of the ski area, we loved the more challenging runs through the trees, long runs (the longest being 11km!), quiet slopes and excellent mountain restaurants. The Montana Lodge & Spa was exactly as I was expecting, high level service, contemporary styling and warm hospitality.

Auchecorne Party, January 2018 (Guest)

1 - Resort - La Thuile is very clearly a boutique resort. This comes with the charm and intimacy of a smaller environment, with beautiful surroundings (caveat: we had heavy snow and little visibility during the entirety of our 3 day stay). The overall atmosphere is more a family / detox week end that one of the party resorts like St Anton, for example. The snow conditions held very well despite difficult weather, the intimate size of the resort also applies to the number of slopes available (for the 3 Vallees people out there), but this also has a clear advantage as they also felt quite empty. 2 - Nora Montana (atmosphere): Absolutely fantastic hotel, precisely for what my wife and I were after - more of a quiet and romantic environment. We were able to ski all day and enjoy, every night before dinner, the spa and pool to relax. Overall this was a great enjoy the skiing and relax at the same time over a 3 day period - we came back feeling absolutely rejuvenated. Our room was also great: spacious and comfortable. 3 - Nira Montana (overall):  Beautifully designed hotel with flawless service. The concierge took care of all our needs, from skis to booking restaurants outside the hotel. We just needed to be reminded in the morning what the day had in store for us to get going. 4 - Nira Montana: Very cosy bar area with an enjoyable array of cocktails, with the nice  added touch of having the 'local' spirits incorporated in the menu. Restaurant: also locally minded - the menu was hands down one of the most original ones I'd seen in a long time, regardless of the location - the mix of staple ingredients but of the chef's clearly personal touch made me want to try every dish, which I clearly didn't get a chance to do. Those I DID try were absolutely fantastic (starter was a wild mushroom dish, main was a a pasta a veal ravioli with carrot coulis that felt to me like a reconstructed Osso Bucco, to great effect) and incorporated a fantastic blend of local Savoyard and Italian cuisine. The atmosphere may be more of hotel feel than that of a stand alone restaurant, which is the only criticism I could come up with in this context, but I would recommend the restaurant independently of the hotel to any person visiting the resort.

The west facing rooms are the most sunniest and look out over the ski area.

The hotel is in a quiet residential area; there is a way that you can ski from it to the lifts when the snow is good as they have built a bridge over the river! Most guests opt for the very efficient shuttle service to the lifts which takes a few minutes.

There are two restaurants; 'Stars' offers more elegant dining where as the 'Lounge' offers light bites, pizzas and pasta dishes.

The bar, with its comfortable seating, is the place to come for a pre-dinner cocktail and canapes which the Italians are known for! Try a Hugo (elderflower cordial, muddled mint with Prosecco) or an Aperol Spritz (Aperol, Prozecco and a splash of soda water).

La Thuile is linked with La Rosiere in France and offers fantastic intermediate skiing with some lovely mountain restaurants. The blue runs are like greens and the red runs are like blues - everyone can look good on these slopes!
