Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Heredia is fascinating all year round and the climate here is more consistent throughout the year. November to April are the best months for sunshine. The ‘Green’ season, from May to October, is a good time to visit: it’s sunny in the mornings with rain in the afternoons. The quietest period is April to early June. The rain can be particularly strong in September and October.

Insider's View

A great alternative to staying in San Jose for the start and end of your trip.

The tour to the sulphur-smelling crater at the Poas Volcano is very interesting, but arrive early to beat the crowds and get the best views before the clouds comes in.

La Piedre is a fantastic room with its own private terrace with beautiful views and a really spacious bathroom.

Probably the best place to enjoy a coffee tour - make sure to try and fit it in if you are only there for one night. Small enough for you to walk around, you can really see each part of the process, and then enjoy an extensive coffee tasting at the end!

Sit in the jacuzzi overlooking the valley with a glass of wine during sunset, an ideal setting as it can get chilly in the evenings.

Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation Resort is an arty boutique country inn located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica near San Jose, with stunning views of nearby volcanoes, cloud forests and coffee plantations. Each guest room is individual in style.

Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation Resort has an extraordinary setting 4,000 feet above sea level nestled amidst tropical fauna, rolling countryside, orchards and its own coffee plantation. Being just 25 minutes from San Jose international airport it is the ideal introduction to Costa Rica and to unwind at the beginning or end of a holiday.

Originally designed as a private home, the Gaudi-style main house has been transformed into a sustainable boutique hotel and offers 14 beautifully decorated Master and Junior suites, each individual and totally unique. Four of the junior suites are shared between two villas in the gardens, which can be a great option for families. The majority of the suites have private terraces and sweeping views of the valley and surrounding mountains and are whimsically decorated with original art work and murals.

Guests can relax by the chiminea in the main house, soothed by running water from the internal fountains. The Resort's restaurant El Tigre Vestido uses the freshest ingredients from the properties own fruit orchard and organic vegetable and herb greenhouse. The hotel also has a fabulous hillside infinity pool and jacuzzi with stunning views of the gardens below.

There is plenty to experience at Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation Resort from exploring its own organic coffee plantation with an expert guide, bird watching tours around the gardens, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, rafting, canopy tours, butterfly farms and Poas volcano visits.

I really enjoyed my short stay at this typical Costa Rican hotel that is so conveniently located close to the airport. Welcomed by Barbara I immediately felt like home in this quirky little place. I stayed in one of the 8 rooms in the main house which was called Piedra- all rooms are different and unique and are full of murals, art and local crafts. Have a good cup of coffee and enjoy the view of the valley right from your balcony. I love the commitment to sustainability and the eggs you eat for breakfast come from the chickens in the back yard. As you are in the central valley the nights here can get a bit chilly. After travelling in the hot and humid climate this was a nice change and I really enjoyed snuggling up in the super soft duvets (made out of Bamboo) before my early flight the next morning.

A really quirky, boutique hotel - ideally located for a quick and easy airport transfer - but packed full of character that most airport hotels don't have. Each room is completely unique, with interesting architectural features and beautiful hand painted murals that really project a story, and make you really feel like you are in Costa Rica. Great breakfast options - and one of the best places to have a traditional "tico breakfast" - rice and beans with plantain and eggs, served with coffee from their own plantation.

I enjoyed my night spent at Finca Rosa Blanca, the hotel has a huge amount of charm with each room completely unique whether its in the main house or one of the two separate villas. Lots of artwork and unique furniture with a tropical style. It feels like a mad Hawaiian holiday home created in the 1960s! The views are lovely looking out across San Jose and the mountains beyond and food and service were great, really a nice place to spend a night on arrival or before heading home.

I thought this hotel was lovely - and so unique. The architecture is quirky and very different to anything else I've seen before. My room was gorgeous, and had a terrace overlooking the valley into San Jose. It was clear a lot of love had gone into the building and decoration of the hotel, which originated as a private home, it was full of murals depicting typical Costa Rican life. It's also set on a coffee plantation which you can get a guided tour of to learn more. Highly recommended.

As far as capital cities go San Jose really doesnt have a huge amount to write home about however as soon as you venture out into the countryside outside it is a whole different story. The open views of the verdant coffee plantations from Finca Rosa Blanca and the attention to detail in the main house and suites really blew me away when I visited recently. I have to admit I wasnt sure about the Gaudi-esque style of architecture (outside of Barcelona!) before visiting the property however I have to say I was won over on seeing it in person. What I loved about the property is that it is totally unique and with heaps of character.

All roads lead from San José but instead of staying in the scrappy capital start your trip in the mountains to the north where this elegant little hotel commands wide, open views of verdant coffee plantations from its 13 suites and hilltop pool. The Gaudi-esque building is all swooping lines and curving windows and each room is a work of art with hand-painted murals and tiled Jacuzzis in delightfully quaint bathrooms.

The owners are leading the movement for sustainable tourism in Costa Rica: this is the model for combining luxury with impeccable green credentials - and the food is sublime.
