Travelling between Darwin in the north and Adelaide in the south, The Ghan travels across Australia’s Red Centre, a vast expanse of near-deserted land, pocketed with tiny hamlets and remote outposts. The two or three day journeys are an opportunity to explore this isolated landscape, its ancient rock paintings and iconic sites such as Alice Springs, while enjoying the sociable atmosphere, fine dining and local wines of the classic dining car.
Capturing the simple elegance of a bygone era of rail travel, the cabins offer sitting areas for the day that cleverly convert into upper and lower berths in the Gold cabins or double/twin beds in the Platinum cabins. The Gold cabins offer both single and twin accommodation, with the single cabins sharing toilet and shower facilities at the end of the corridor, while the twin cabins feature private ensuite shower rooms and toilets. The cabins of the Platinum Service are more spacious, with a seating area and table that transforms into a double or twin beds for the night and an ensuite shower room. In 2026 you will also have the option to travel in Australia's most exclusive suites, Australis and Aurora. These suites and are generously proportioned, both with a separate bedroom featuring a queen size bed. The Australis Suite is the largest at three times the size of our Platinum cabins, while the Aurora Suite is double the space.
Dining onboard The Ghan is an occasion, with delicious cuisines inspired by the route and crafted from locally sourced ingredients, accompanied by fine Australian wines. Gold passengers can enjoy all-inclusive dining in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant, while Platinum passengers are able to choose between the art deco glamour of the Queen Adelaide and the modern elegance of the Platinum Club. The Outback Explorer Lounge provides a social area for meeting friends old and new, relaxing with a book or simply soaking in the passing landscapes. Please note that there is no WiFi onboard the train.
Depending on the route chosen, time off-board offers a privileged opportunity to explore the remote wilds of the outback. Cruise through the sandstone gorges of the Katherine River, uncover the ancient tales and abundant flora and fauna of the Alice Springs Desert Park or experience life in an opal mining town. Optional upgrades include helicopter trips or scenic flights.
A journey onboard The Ghan is a chance to experience the vast expanse of the outback in comfort and with delicious meals, wines and imaginative excursions.
