Average time to visit
The best time to visit the Lake District is between November and April when temperatures are at their warmest. December through February is peak summer and when the region is at its busiest. For those keen to ski then Argentina's winter from July to September is the best time. Temperatures are much colder. The Lake District is particularly beautiful in spring (October) and autumn (March). These months tend to be milder than during the height of summer and quieter.

Las Balsas is a small luxury boutique hotel on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi in Argentina's scenic Lake District. Located to the north of Bariloche, this Relais & Chateaux property offers the finest cuisine and accommodation in the area.
The lakeside setting of Las Balsas is like something from a fairy-tale. This delightful boutique property is surrounded by dramatic mountains and lush forests, while pristine glacial lakes and the majestic peaks of the snow-capped Andes dominate the landscape here, serving as a perfect natural playground for adventurous travellers.
It is an intimate hotel with just four cosy rooms and six suites, all decorated with a refined style and elegance, and with stunning views over the shimmering Nahuel Huapi Lake or to the mountains. Interiors showcase luxurious bedding and soft furnishings, along with modern amenities like complimentary WiFi, Bluetooth speakers and flat screen televisions. The hotel itself also has several cosy candlelit lounge spaces with plush furniture, and a small library and bar complete the space.
There is also an on site spa with a gym, indoor/outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, perfect for relaxing in the tranquil surroundings after a day out in the park. Outdoors, you can expect direct lake access including a small sand beach, dock and boathouse which can accommodate dramatic arrivals and departures by yacht.
As you'd expect from a member of Relais & Chateaux, the dining is a real highlight here, with incredible attention to detail and a superb sommelier to help complement your dishes with the perfect wine from the cellar. In the winter Las Balsas is the perfect base for skiing the nearby Bayo Hill, whilst in the summer most activities revolve around the lake, with sailing, swimming, kayaking and fishing to name a few of the activities on offer. Trekking and horseback riding in the area are also not to be missed. You may even get a glimpse of Nahuelito, the lake's very own Loch Ness monster.
Las Balsas has four rooms and six suites, all with stunning mountain or lake views. Each is uniquely decorated in an individual style, with furnishings combining warmth and elegance.
Families and children are very welcome at Hosteria Las Balsas. There is a children’s menu on offer in the restaurant and babysitting can be arranged on request. Children will undoubtedly enjoy many of the soft adventure activities on offer in the surrounding area.
The luxury spa at Las Balsas offers a wide selection of treatments amongst relaxing surroundings with soothing lake views. Features of the spa include a Jacuzzi, indoor/outdoor pool, complete gym facilities, Pilates bed and Scottish shower. The hotel also has a lounge and bar and an excellent restaurant and wine cellar.
The concierge at Las Balsas is on hand to arrange a host of activities including cooking classes and wine tasting plus boat trips, bird watching, sailing, golf, fly fishing, horse riding, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking and rafting, and excursions within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. The nearby Cerro Bayo ski centre is perfect for skiing and snowboarding during the winter months from July-September.

I found Las Balsas to have very welcoming and attentive staff. There as a great wine cellar, and tastings are possible to arrange with dinner. The restaurant here is phenomenal and very reasonably priced. The spa and pool is a real highlight, the pool is a swim in and out pool so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. I'd recommend the corner suites where I stayed, as they are very spacious with separate bedroom and bathroom areas. However, if you're just looking for something cozy, then the entry level standard rooms are good too.

Hosteria Las Balsas is my favourite of the boutique options in the Lake District. There is a real sense here of seclusion, surrounded by forest and with wonderful views across Lake Nahuel Huapi. It's also a place for great dining, and the food here is memorable. I loved the personalised wine tastings given in their capacious cellar. If you want to have a splurge, it's worth considering upgrading to a Suite, which is beautifully decorated and includes upturned Indian canoes, a wonderful bathroom and superb views. I also loved the spa. Although it's a great place to relax and perfect for honeymooners, there are plenty of activities available, and if you want to go walking, riding and, in winter, skiing, these are all easily arranged.
