Sapa
The former French hill station of Sapa is set in a landscape of cascading rice terraces and colourful hill tribe villages, overlooking a lush valley encircled by mountains. This northwestern corner of Vietnam is a dream destination for hikers of all abilities, offering a chance to escape the heat of the lowlands and explore the staggeringly beautiful emerald-green terrain.
With a number of walks traversing this spectacular scenery, you’ll pass tiny villages where many of the inhabitants still wear the traditional dress of the tribe, and may catch one of the weekly hill-tribe markets. While Sapa itself is now a little overdeveloped, the opportunity to get out into the Vietnamese countryside is without compare.
