Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time to visit Laos, Cambodia and the central coast of Vietnam is from February to May. This is when the weather is driest and you can get the most out of the amazing temples and beautiful countryside. March and April is a particularly good time to visit all three parts of Indochina.

Insider's View

We really recommend upgrading to a Pool Suite at Amansara - there's nothing like soaking in your private pool after a long and dusty day of temple exploration.

Try L'Elephant in Luang Prabang, it's an atmospheric French/Laos restaurant with bundles of charm.

Take a journey through some of the most evocative parts of Indochina, exploring the ancient temples of Angkor in Siem Reap, the charming small town of Luang Prabang in the heart of Laos, and the stunning central coast of Vietnam, staying at the most spectacular properties in each destination.

  1. Days 1-4: Siem Reap & Angkor Wat

Your journey begins with three nights to visit the stone monoliths of Angkor Wat, located just moments from the town of Siem Reap in northern Cambodia. These ancient monuments hark back to the days of King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, and their archaeological significance puts them on par with ancient sites such as the Pyramids and Machu Picchu. Uncover the history of these crumbling ruins alongside your knowledgeable guide as you embark on a full day tour of the temples, arriving at each location just after the crowds have dispersed. To appreciate the temples from another angle you can opt to take a helicopter flight over the complex. We have also included a sunrise visit to the iconic Angkor Wat, and day on a motor boat exploring the wildlife and floating villages on Tonle Sap, the largest lake in southeast Asia. In Siem Reap we recommend staying at the Amansara close to the heart of the town and with the inviting ambience of a gracious home set in a private garden compound, and the ideal base to return to after a long day of tours.

    Accommodation: Amansara (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-7: Luang Prabang

A short flight takes you over the border to Luang Prabang, a historic city nestling in the hills of Laos. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO world heritage town and a wonderful place to explore on foot or by bike, discovering its fine temples that dominate the tranquil streets and watching the saffron-robed monks collecting alms. For a totally new experience, you can’t beat the Rosewood Luang Prabang, a luxury resort with chalets, villas and tents gathered around a central waterfall. The beauty of Laos is overwhelming, and no better place to experience it than with three nights in this gorgeous property, just 15 minutes’ drive from town. We have included for you a full day city tour to gain a local’s eye view of this charming town, and to visit locations such as the Royal Palace and the fascinating Museum of Ethnology. We also thoroughly recommend taking a day to relax at the pristine Kuang Si waterfalls, a torrent of water tumbling down to a series of cool, blue pools, perfect for swimming.

Accommodation: Rosewood Luang Prabang (3 nights)

  3. Days 7-9: Hanoi

Make your way from the jungled mountains of Laos to the picturesque capital of Vietnam, Hanoi. Two nights in the luxurious Sofitel Metropole will be plenty of time to explore the small city center, or to venture further afield to visit the wonderful museums documenting Hanoi’s turbulent history. We have included a half day jeep tour which is a fun way to explore the major landmarks of the city in a manner completely in keeping with Hanoi’s history. In your own time you can venture on foot into the tangle of narrow wooden buildings and crumbling coffee houses that make up the winding lanes of the Old Quarter, just a few minutes’ walk from your door. Great for unique shopping and exploring, you can really enjoy a day losing yourself in these entirely authentic back streets.

Accommodation: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi (2 nights)

  4. Days 9-12: Hoi An

A short flight from Hanoi is the UNESCO protected town of Hoi An, perched on Vietnam’s glorious central coast. Here we invite you to stay at the Four Seasons Nam Hai, ideally located on the beach just a few minutes’ drive from Hoi An. Stay in a luxurious private villa, steps away from the beach and indulge in a day of cooking and exploring local food markets with the Four Season’s cooking academy chefs. Take a morning walk into town with your guide to explore the Old Town where you’ll find charming wooden houses, brightly colored paper lanterns and the famous tailor shops, where you can have new clothes and shoes tailored for you in just a day or two.

Accommodation: Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai Hoi An (3 nights)

  5. Days 12-16: Central Vietnam and Beaches

Finally, it’s time to bid farewell to society and strike out to the isolated and private Amanoi, a short flight to the south. The tranquil resort is located on a cliff edge above a sandy beach, and the name Amanoi is derived from the Sanskrit word for ‘peace’ and noi meaning ‘place’, defining the experience that awaits. Four nights here is the perfect way to unwind and reflect on your adventures through this magical part of the world, and you can also enjoy indulging at the spa, snorkeling, kayaking and fishing.

    Accommodation: Amanoi (4 nights)
