It is very difficult to predict the weather in the United Kingdom - in the summer from May to late September is generally seen as the most pleasant time to visit. Rainfall is difficult to predict - but the UK does not receive as much as many are led to believe! In the winters, temperatures do fall, but there is nothing better than finding a remote pub with a roaring fire to sit beside after a long walk in the country.

A sympathetically restored Georgian country home, Heckfield Place is just an hour from London but lies in 400 acres of quintessentially English gardens, the produce of which is woven into the delicious fare of the restaurants by famed chef, Skye Gyngell.
Surrounded by gardens, ancient woodlands and wild meadows, Heckfield Place is a vision of refined elegance, tastefully understated luxury and with an unbounded connection to the nature on its doorstep. While respecting and preserving the heritage of the building, the decor blends a contemporary flair with antiques and original features to create something that is at once unique and comfortingly familiar.Combining skilled craftsmanship with natural materials and individually curated works of art, the 44 rooms and suites are effortlessly sophisticated, homely, with a sense of being part of the countryside in the woven mats, English oak floors and handcrafted furniture. With six room types ranging from the intimate Friends Room to the vast grandeur of the Long Room, and dotted throughout the house, corridors and grounds, the accommodations feature Wildsmith Skin amenities, bespoke minibars and thoughtful touches that make you feel immediately at home. Mealtimes at Heckfield remind you once again of the exceptional beauty of the landscape that surrounds the house. Expertly crafted by Skye Gyngell, the menus of Hearth and Marle take the produce of the estate’s biodynamic farm and conjure up impossibly fresh, natural and rustically refined dishes. From the pared back simplicity and honest food of Marle to the classic dishes of Hearth, cooked on an open fire, dining at Heckfield Place is an occasion to savour and remember. This communality with nature and the landscape extends to the Little Bothy Spa, where Wildsmith products and holistic wellbeing from Bodyism combine to create a sanctuary for body and mind. Ingredients from the apothecary garden and bespoke fitness plans will leave you feeling at once refreshed, revived, and relaxed. The 44 rooms of Heckfield Place have taken the grandeur and sophistication of the Georgian property and stripped it back with an understated, yet effortlessly elegant approach. Handcrafted furniture sits comfortably with antique heirlooms and individual pieces of art from the owner’s collection create a sense of staying in the home of an impossibly stylish friend, while locally sourced materials bring the beauty of the grounds into the house. From the cosy Friends Room to a two-bedroom cottage tucked away in the estate grounds, the house offers a range of accommodation options that all share the same thoughtful attention to detail and homely flourishes.
Children can be as noisy and wild as they like in the 400 acres of grounds that surround Heckfield Place. Suggested activities such as den building, treasure hunts, farm visits and creating a bouquet with the floristry team all allow them to become acquainted with the natural world. Extra beds and cots can be added in the Chamber and Master rooms, though only over 16s are allowed in the rooms of the main house. A few of the rooms are also dog friendly.
Under the watchful eye of culinary director, Skye Gyngell, the two restaurants of Heckfield Place present seasonal menus of locally sourced, sustainable produce. Rustic, honest dishes place the provenance of the ingredients at the heart of the menu at Marle, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on a light-filled terrace. The same ethos applies to Hearth, open on Friday and Saturday for dinner and for lunch on Sunday, where hearty dishes are cooked on an open fire and reflect the seasonal availability of the farm and grounds. Cosy up in front of an open fire at the Moon Bar, where a menu of handcrafted cocktails and specially selected spirits again use the produce of the farm and garden with delicious results. The Little Bothy Spa is a calming sanctuary which places holistic wellbeing and naturally sourced ingredients at its heart. In collaboration with Wildsmith and Bodyism, the spa presents a tailored program of yoga, pilates and personal training alongside treatments that can be personalized to the individual needs and requirements of the guest.
Days at Heckfield Place can be spent enjoying the expansive grounds, wandering down to the lakes, wild swimming, breathing in the lavender, roses and wisteria of the walled gardens or getting lost amongst the ancient meadows and woodlands of the estate. A glamorous screening room plays host to film nights, while The Assembly cultivates a diverse program of events and talks held in the farm, screening room, woodlands and across all 400 acres of the grounds.

With a focus on using organic and natural materials there is a fresh and light feel to Heckfield Place. The earthy tones and calming color scheme encourage guests to feel welcome, relaxed and at peace. Being located on a fully functional farm, it only makes sense that these themes run through. Plenty of common areas invite guests to get out of their rooms and enjoy everything the property has to offer. Whether you are sipping on cocktails in the bar, warming yourself in front of the fire in the drawing room or playing some games in the activity lounge, every space is a lovely setting. For a culinary experience to delight, make sure you visit Marle the casual yet upscale dining option, featuring local and organic food as well as produce sourced from their gardens and farm. I was lucky enough to enjoy their parmesan and parsley risotto and ricotta and citrus beurre blanc gnudi. During your stay truly embrace the nature that surrounds you and go for a walk in the many gardens that line Heckfield or take a trip to the Little Bothy Spa for some natural body treatments and massages that will bring you into perfect harmony.
