Oaxaca's historic center is best explored on foot. The main highlights are all within walking distance of each other along cobbled streets with charming little shops and restaurants, graceful arcades and street vendors. The Zocalo or main square is perhaps one of the liveliest plazas in all of Mexico. The museums here are plentiful and well renowned with the impressive Santo Domingo church with its adjoining convent, the cathedral, the plazas and Indian markets all making it an fascinating place to spend a few days.
The city was founded by the Spanish in 1521 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, it has managed to retain many of its native roots amongst the ornate colonial architecture of its beautiful city center. Its a great place to wander around or simply sit in one of the cafes soaking up the atmosphere. Oaxaca has vibrant art, music and culinary scene here and an abundance of restaurants.
