Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best and most popular times to visit Japan are the climatically stable seasons of spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). The highlight of spring is the cherry-blossom season, which usually arrives in early April. Fall is an equally good time to travel, with pleasant temperatures and soothing autumn colors, which usually peak between late October and mid-November. Of course, you can visit Japan anytime although the summer, from June to August, can be very hot and humid, and winter can be a little chilly for some people’s taste.

Itinerary

This active adventure takes you across some of central Japan's most stunning sceneries, including Kiso Valley with its vibrant culinary arts, the charming villages along the heritage Nakasendo trail, the picturesque alpine sceneries of Kamikochi, the UNESCO rural villages of Shirakawago, as well as optional active adventures at Mount Ontake. Gourmet lovers can also enjoy Michelin dining at Nagoya and visit to a sake cellar brewery.

  1. Days 1-2: Kiso Fukushima, Central Honshu Mountains, Japan

Arriving into Chubu Centrair International Airport, you will then be transferred into the Kiso Fukushima Valley, the gateway into the Japanese alps.

Depending on the time of your flight arrival, we can arrange optional tour of Tokoname pottery, as well as optional visit to Furusato-taikenkan where you can immerse in the local arts and crafts by making your own chopsticks, or learning how to knead dough to make your own soba lunch.

The next morning, you will be driven to Tsumago-juku where you will enjoy the iconic Nakasendo historical site walk.

Afterwards, you have the option to experience canoeing at Ontake Lake and hiking up Mount Ontake to visit the beautiful waterfalls at supplement cost; or if you fancy something more relaxing, a Friday visit to Cella MASUMI sake brewery tour is perfect after a day of exploration!

As the day ends, you will continue to Matsumoto.

    Accommodation: Hotel Fukinomori (1 night)

  2. Days 2-4: Matsumoto

Make a day trip to Kamikochi for an excellent alpine hike. Revel in the beauty of the stunning mountain scenery. In Fall, the surroundings turn ablaze in a riot of red and gold and usually the colors peak in mid-October. Otherwise, enjoy the marvelous views of alpine flowers and wildlife during Spring and Summer as well.

Matsumoto itself is a city worth exploring in further depth. Head to Matsumoto Castle, otherwise known as the crow castle due to its black exterior. Designated as one of the four 'National Treasures of Japan', it is also one of the most well preserved and beautiful amongst Japan's castles. Stroll along Nakamachi Street's charming alleyways with a traditional exterior lined with well-preserved old buildings and houses.

Accommodation: Hoshino KAI Matsumoto (2 nights)

  3. Days 4-6: Takayama

During your stay in Takayama, you will make a day trip to the secluded and charming mountain village of Shirakawago, protected under the UNESCO. They are known for the traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses, where the roofs are built in the shape of a triangle that seem to resemble the hands of Buddhist monks during their prayers.

Back in Takayama, enjoy a walking tour of Sanmachi Historical Street before returning to your ryokan for the night.

    Accommodation: Wanosato Takayama (2 nights)

  4. Days 6-7: Nagoya

As your final day beckons, take a train to Nagoya where you will enjoy some free time at leisure.

Nagoya is known for its excellent gourmet. We can assist in booking reservation at some of the Michelin restaurants such as Kaiseki Hachisen, Sekine, Hasshokan, or Myo-an. Our Travel Consultants will be happy to recommend. After a night's rest, you will depart for the airport for your international flight home.

Accommodation: Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel (1 night)
