Straddling the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly even climate year-round. Rather than four seasons, Indonesia has two – wet and dry – and there are no extremes of temperature between winter and summer. In most parts of Indonesia, the wet season falls between October and April and the dry season between May and September. December and January see Indonesia at its most humid and rain tends to come in sudden tropical downpours, but it can also rain for more prolonged periods.

The elegant, 38-meter Katharina is a traditional Phinisi vessel, built to sail to the most remote corners of the Indonesian ‘ring of fire’, discovering unique wildlife, unspoiled beaches and the pristine marine environment.

Hand built from tropical hardwood by traditional craftsmen, the Katharina was destined for a life as a cargo ship until her slender hull and elegant lines were discovered by Seatrek Bali as she was being built. Having been entirely transformed into a luxurious sailing vessel, Katharina still retains the charm of the Buginese schooners of old. Katharina’s main deck is the place to relax on comfortable day beds, soak up the sun from a lounger and enjoy al-fresco dining from the large shaded dining table.
The on-board chefs will prepare three delicious meals a day, often from fish caught along the way or bought from local fisherman, along with fresh produce from local island markets. Snacks and drinks are available all day, with wine, beer and alcoholic drinks available to purchase on board, and the upper deck is the perfect place to relax with a sundowner after a long day exploring.
Any charter on board the Katharina will be packed with adventure and discovery. Under the watchful eye of the experienced cruise director, daily shore excursions will uncover the secrets of this vast archipelago, from the wonders of the Spice Islands to the infamous Komodo Dragons and the unspoiled waters of Raja Ampat. Snorkelling trips are a daily occurrence, amongst stunning coral gardens and a myriad of marine life, from manta rays and dugongs to the elusive whale shark. Shore excursions visit local villages and markets, remote beaches and steamy jungles teeming with wildlife, including colorful hornbills and infamous Komodo dragons, perhaps incorporating hikes to local beauty spots or beach picnics under swaying palm trees.

The Katharina’s six cabins are situated below deck, with two double bed cabins, two triple cabins which house one double bed one upper single bunk and two twin bunk cabins. Natural wood contrasts with crisp white linens to create a relaxed space, complete with private bathrooms, air conditioning, wardrobe and safe.

Children over the age of two are welcomed on board the Katharina, with plenty of games and activities to keep them entertained. The triple cabins are perfect for families wishing to share a room with younger children, and the chefs pride themselves on creating delicious, fresh child-friendly cuisine. Due to the nature of the environment and the fact that the Katharina is a working vessel, parental supervision is required at all times.

Meals are served on deck around the large communal table, freshly prepared by the team of on-board chefs and often created from a bounty of locally sourced produce. Below deck is a small lounge, complete with a library of books and television, however there is no internet or satellite signal on board.

Daily snorkeling excursions are the highlight of many cruises onboard Katharina, exploring the pristine marine environment and remote coral reefs of the Indonesian archipelago. Shore excursions to local villages, markets, museums and unspoiled beaches occur each day, guided by the cruise director’s intimate knowledge of the archipelago.
