Itinerary

Day 1 - 3
  • Hanoi

    At a Glance

    Day 1 Arrival:

Hanoi feels structured from the start — wide boulevards, faded colonial facades, lakes breaking up the traffic. After your transfer, check in and settle properly. Arrival days are best kept light. A short walk nearby is enough to understand the city’s rhythm.

    Day 2: The City’s Landmarks

With your guide, you begin at West Lake and Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest temple in the city, dating back to the 6th century. It’s compact and deliberate in design, sitting just off the water.

At the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, expect queues. The building is stark and imposing, reflecting the political significance of the man inside. Nearby, his stilt house is noticeably modest. The One Pillar Pagoda, balanced on a single column, remains one of the city’s defining symbols.

Later, walk through the Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake, where daily life plays out on the pavements. You’ll also choose between the Vietnam Women's Museum or Hoa Lo Prison, depending on which aspect of history you’d like to explore further.

Day 3: Rural Hanoi by Bicycle

Spend the morning cycling beyond the city towards the Red River and the villages that sit along its banks. In Bac Bieng, lanes narrow and rice paddies replace traffic. You’ll cross the river by local ferry and stop at a family home for tea before returning to Hanoi.

It’s a simple contrast — rural life just minutes from the capital.

Day 3 - 6
  • Hoi An

    At a Glance

    Day 3: Hidden Hoi An

With a local guide, you walk through Hoi An Ancient Town at a measured pace. Former merchant houses reveal how this was once a serious trading port — timber frames, internal courtyards, a layout designed for both business and family life. The Japanese Covered Bridge is smaller than most expect, but carefully engineered, built as a link between communities.

Away from the main streets, you step into a private house where a martial arts master continues a family discipline blending Qigong, Tai Chi and Vietnamese Võ. You’ll learn a few controlled movements. It’s precise and intentional — more about balance than force.

You end the morning in a local home with a traditional dessert before returning to the coast.

    Day 4: Market & Cooking

The market is at its most interesting early on, before the heat builds. With a chef, you move stall by stall, learning how herbs, broths and fresh produce shape central Vietnamese food. The emphasis is always on balance, sweet against sour, herbs against richness.

At Vy’s Market Cooking School, you watch dishes prepared properly before attempting them yourself. Street food here isn’t improvised; it’s structured. By the time you sit down to eat what you’ve made, the layers make sense.

    Day 5: My Son

The drive to My Son Sanctuary takes you inland through farmland and low hills. The site was once the religious center of the Champa Kingdom, active between the 3rd and 14th centuries. The remaining brick towers vary in condition, some heavily weathered, others still sharply defined.

Your guide explains how the bricks were laid without visible mortar and how Hindu symbolism shaped the temple designs. It’s not an overwhelming site in size, which allows you to move through it without crowds feeling intrusive.

After around four hours, you return to Hoi An and the calm of the coast.

Day 6 - 9
  • Near Luang Prabang

    At a Glance

Day 6: Arrival in Luang Prabang

From Hanoi, you fly into Luang Prabang, where the pace shifts immediately. The airport is small, the roads quiet, and temple roofs sit low against a backdrop of hills.

You’ll stay at Satri House, a former residence set within a leafy courtyard, walking distance from the center but removed enough to feel calm.

Your first evening is at leisure. Wander into town if you feel like it, or settle into the garden and adjust to the slower rhythm.

Day 7: Temples & Royal Legacy

Begin at the former Royal Palace Museum, which offers context to Laos’ recent history. The building itself is restrained, blending traditional Lao design with colonial influence.

Continue to Wat Xieng Thong, widely regarded as the town’s most significant temple. Its sweeping rooflines sit low to the ground, and the mosaic “Tree of Life” on the rear façade is easy to miss if you rush.

The town is compact, so much of it is explored on foot — quiet lanes, saffron-robed monks moving between temples, daily life unfolding without urgency.

Day 8: Kuang Si & The Mekong

An early start takes you out to Kuang Si Falls before the main crowds arrive. The water moves through a series of tiered limestone pools, each a different shade of turquoise. Breakfast is arranged nearby, allowing time to pause rather than pass straight through.

In the evening, board a boat on the Mekong River. As the light lowers, the river becomes the focus — slow-moving, wide, and quiet. It’s a simple end to your time in Laos.

Best time to visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Cambodia and Laos are hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Laos and Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water. Vietnam has three different weather systems; generally the South follows Cambodia and Laos' weather pattern with their dry season ending a little earlier in March. The central coast is at its best from April to September with July and August when it is at its hottest. North Vietnam is dry and warm from March to June and October to November, although May and June can get very humid and hot. July to September is very wet, and December to February is cool and drizzly.
