Best time to Visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Zermatt offers excellent conditions throughout a long season. Skiing is well under way by early December and even late November due to high altitude glacial terrain around 4000m. As the season progresses, lower runs offer great conditions too and the skiing below 2000m is appealing when it gets really cold. By April when other resorts can be knee deep in slush, Zermatt will have the best conditions in the Alps. Check out the Zermatt Unplugged music festival in April too.
Insider's View
To start planning your holiday to Alpenhof
Description
Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn, is also home to the family-run Alpenhof hotel. Enjoying a central location, the traditional Alpenhof epitomises Swiss hospitality – gourmet cuisine, a warm welcome and a relaxing spa with swimming pool awaits.
The traditionally Swiss exterior of the Alpenhof houses a luxurious hotel with individually-decorated rooms.
The hotel is well-known for its gourmet cuisine. A luxurious champagne breakfast is on offer with an array of goodies (including fabulous home-made jams) and a delicious half-board menu is served in the main restaurant. ‘Le Gourmet’ restaurant, awarded 15 Gault Millau points, features à la carte ‘Alpine Mediterranean’ cuisine. The convivial lounge is perfect for relaxing in front of the roaring fire and swapping stories after skiing, or for digestifs after dinner.
The spa facilities are amongst the best in Zermatt and an array of treatments is available for après-ski relaxation.
The Alpenhof's position overlooking the river and opposite the Sunnegga Express funicular makes the hotel a great choice for quick and easy access to the slopes and to the multitude of boutiques and bars in the village!
Zermatt is a special place that every skier must visit. Steeped in Alpine history and overlooked by the iconic Matterhorn, in our opinion, car-free Zermatt has more charm, sophistication and romance than any other Alpine resort. Added to this, the ski area is extensive, varied and complemented by the finest mountain restaurants in the world. There is plenty going on!

Activities
Zermatt is part of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise area, home to 350km of pistes, with a connection to Cervinia in Italy. There’s enough to keep skiers of all standards amused. The village itself is a pleasure to explore, whether on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage, with a wealth of shops, restaurants and historic buildings to enjoy. Exploring the mountain is also straightforward with mountain railways and some wonderful walks, whether on foot or on snowshoes. If you would like a really close view of the Matterhorn, a helicopter flight around it is truly breathtaking.
Zermatt is much more of a cultural centre than many other resorts. The Matterhorn Museum is a must-see with fascinating exhibits and the English church is a highlight, especially at Christmas. Every April, the Zermatt Unplugged music festival attracts big name acts.
There are also plenty more active possibilities including the fitness centre, indoor tennis and squash, gym, heli-skiing, ice skating, paragliding, stunning walking tours, gorge adventures, ice climbing and tobogganing.
Reviews
Georgie Berghaeger (Staff)
Despite the eccentric decor...! The Alpenhof is an excellent hotel, with great service and really great food. The rooms are comfortable and cosy, and you can relax in their wellness centre after a long day on the slopes. It has a great location just across the road from the Sunnegga lift, as well as a short walk from the Gornegrat railway.
