Topped with the remains of the fortress and palace of the ancient civilisation of Kassapa, Sigiriya is an architectural marvel, as becomes clear once you’ve scaled the steps to the summit of the rock, past exquisite frescoes and astounding views of the surrounding countryside.

As the mists swirl around the palm trees and jungle below, the villagers just tiny dots, and the lush landscape rolls away for miles around, its easy to see why this was a good location for a fortress.
