Strategically anchored onto an isolated nunatak at 6,000ft, the Sheldon Chalet is an intriguing addition to its surrounds, an oasis amongst the peaks of the Alaska Range and a luxurious base from which to discover these pristine wilds in style.
This architecturally intriguing property sits atop the Sheldon Nunatak, a feat of engineering genius as well as a luxurious mountain retreat. Sitting in the six sides of a hexagon are five rooms and two shared bathrooms, while a dining area, cosy lounge, bar and kitchen occupy the ground floor. There’s a sense of isolation and drama; with no mobile phone signal or wifi and the only access to the lodge by helicopter, the real world soon becomes a distant memory.
The bedrooms are simple but cosy, the pared back elegance drawing the eye to the picture windows that frame the spellbinding views of the mountains. Faux fur throws add warmth to the large beds, creating a snug sanctuary from which to soak in the changing colours of the mountains as the day begins. The five bedrooms share two bathrooms, each with showers that benefit from a state-of-the-art water system and specially curated toiletries.
With a maximum of ten guests at any time, Sheldon Chalet soon feels like home, whether curled up in front of the fire, gazing out of the large windows at the frozen wilds of the Denali National Park or sipping a cool glass of Alaskan craft beer. The celebrated in-house chef whips up exquisite dishes using local ingredients and from breakfast through afternoon tea to dinner, meals are a gastronomic delight, their flavours rivalled only by the views.
From the moment you step off the helicopter at Sheldon Chalet to be welcomed with champagne and seafood, your world becomes the frozen expanse of the glacier and the mountain peaks beyond. Head out onto the Ruth Glacier with a mountaineering guide and trek across the ice, be hypnotised by the dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis, or explore the nunatak. After a day of activity, unwind in the sauna before sitting down to a drink around the firepit, followed by yet more gourmet delicacies as you join fellow guests for dinner.
There can be few more unique, intriguing accommodations than this architectural gem atop a glacial nunatak. Combine this with a luxuriously welcoming interior, world-class cuisine and otherworldly landscapes, and Sheldon Chalet becomes something very special indeed.
Set into the sides of the building’s hexagon, the five bedrooms of Sheldon Chalet are simple but cosy, their faux fur laden beds creating a welcoming retreat after a day of adventure. As with the rest of the property, the focus here is on the outside and the views of the mountain peaks through the large windows are simply sensational. Four of the bedrooms have king size or twin beds, while the fifth has a queen size bed. All five bedrooms share two bathrooms.
We recommend children to be over 10 years of age due the nature of the activities from the chalet however there is no minimum age for children who are part of an exclusive hire of Sheldon Chalet.
From the sauna to the lounge, the communal areas of Sheldon Chalet share the same focus on relaxation and a disconnection from the pressures of the real world. Without wifi or mobile phone signal the world becomes more distant and time can be spent chatting with family and friends, reading a book or stargazing in a pristine night sky. A large fireplace centres the room, while a family-style dining table is perfect for sociable dinners, crafted by the resident chef from local produce such as Alaska King crab and Copper River salmon.
While you should certainly leave time to curl up and finish a book, the vast expanse of pristine wilderness presents a wealth of adventure, from rappelling to fishing, mountaineering to glacier trekking. From September to April, the 6,000ft elevation and latitude 63-degree location of Sheldon Chalet make it a beautiful spot to witness the magic of the Aurora Borealis.

Sheldon Chalet is a completely unique experience. High in the Alaskan Range is a glacial valley surrounded on all sides by towering peaks and in its centre a small outcrop with a tiny but mighty chalet standing out against the snow. I arrived by helicopter and was instantly spellbound by the scenery and scale of the place. The chalet itself is beautifully done, contemporary light and simple with huge windows on each side of its hexagonal structure to showcase the breathtaking scenery. The staff are brilliant with so much personality, the host, chef and two guides met us on arrival and gave a great introduction before we sat down to a sea food buffet of king crab and oysters as champagne was served. All meals are included and the food is delicious, its incredibly varied, always fresh and not too rich. It's a great change from the rest of Alaska which is very hearty and homestyle. Activities are based out on the glacier with the guides roping us up and then heading out trekking in snow shoes across the glacier in search of the perfect picnic spot. It's possible to do ski touring and at an extra cost you can also hire a small plane to explore the surrounding peaks and get up close and personal with Denali the highest mountain in North America. Returning from the glacier, the chalet is a really cosy place to come back to and just admire the views before playing a game, reading or using the small sauna secreted under the helipad. There is nowhere else on earth that I have been that is quite so isolated and luxurious as Sheldon Chalet and you really do feel privileged to stay.
