Denali and Alaskan Wilderness
Straddling six million acres of soaring mountains, glimmering glaciers and the icy and far-flung tundra, Denali National Park is famed for its bear viewing, and its vast expanse of wilderness and humbling natural beauty is guaranteed to impress.
Denali is arguably the best place in the entire state to observe that prolific Alaskan wildlife; home to large quantities of moose, caribou and bear, you don’t even need to leave your vehicle for an up-close encounter as these magnificent creatures roam freely, outnumbering the area’s human population by a long way. A land of superlatives, the park is also home to Mount Denali (formerly Mount McKinley), the highest peak in North America at 20,320 feet.
In the east, Wrangell St Elias National Park is a remote haven for intrepid travellers, with dazzling blue pools on the brink of snow-capped peaks and blankets of meringue-like mountains in every direction. Relatively inaccessible, Wrangell St. Elias can only be reached by small plane; the excitement begins before you even reach the park, soaring over criss-crossing canyons, glaciers and rivers, whetting your appetite for the adventures ahead.
