Crater Lake Lodge
It’s all about the location at Crater Lake Lodge, one of the Northwest’s grand lodges, first opened in 1915. Perched on the edge of the caldera, this is the ideal spot to appreciate this deep blue lake, the sheer cliffs and cinder cone of Wizard Island.

Overlooking the deepest lake in the USA, Crater Lake Lodge has been welcoming guests since 1915 and is a member of Historic Hotels of America. Nothing can prepare you for the spectacular sight of the lake’s deep blue waters surrounded by sheer cliffs, almost 2,000-feet high. Even more incredible is the opportunity to see a volcano within a volcano. When the volcano, Mount Mazama collapsed nearly 8,000 years ago and began to fill with snow and rainwater, a much smaller ‘post caldera,’ volcano was formed, which is now known as Wizard Island.
Crater Lake Lodge overlooks the lake at Rim Village, offering unbeatable views of the lake. Sitting 1,000-feet above the lake on the edge of the caldera, although the property was rebuilt in 1995, the lodge offers the warm welcome and the period charm of a bygone era. The Great Hall boasts an impressive fireplace, historic rustic charm and is the ideal spot to relax with a drink, play a game and make new friends.
Open from late-May to mid-October, the lodge has 71 rooms, some of which offer views over the lake. Traditionally furnished, the ensuite rooms have no TVs or telephones that might distract from the serene and peaceful vibe. While Wi-Fi is available, the service is patchy owing to the remote location. A variety of room categories are available, but we would recommend the Deluxe Lake View Rooms with a choice of either a King, a Queen or two Queen beds. Rooms with two Queens can accommodate up to five guests with an additional rollaway bed. Families may also wish to consider a Loft Room, featuring either a King or Queen bed and an additional Queen in the loft. These rooms also feature partial lake views.
There is an onsite dining room with a large fireplace, serving dishes that include Alaskan salmon, halibut, duck, and venison, along with an extensive wine list. Overlooking the lake, it’s a great place to sample Pacific Northwest regional cuisine.
Guests can also learn more about the volcanic history of the area and the lodge in the Exhibit Room and attend one of the National Park Service’s Ranger talks, hosted at the lodge. Located at Rim Village, a stay at Crater Lake Lodge will allow you to get the most from your visit to the lake and enjoy the hiking, swimming, fishing, and boat trips on offer.
