Jackson Hole has an extreme continental climate with very cold winters and warm summers. Activities are very seasonal. Spring, from late April to June, is marked by mild days and cold nights, with some rain and occasional snow. It is in spring that newborn elk, moose, bison and bears start appearing. Summers offer warm days and cool nights and a profusion of brightly coloured wildflowers. In autumn, the aspen and cottonwood run gold and red. The days are sunny, with cold nights. Rain eventually gives way to snow. Winter brings with it enough deep snow to keep a skier happy well into April. It also brings the elk to the valley. They come down from the mountains by the thousands to the National Elk Refuge, which lies at the very edge of town.

In many respects, this is quite typical of the Four Seasons properties that I have visited, amazing service, lovely rooms, top notch restaurants and bars, knowledgeable concierge, a true five-star experience but with a style and dcor that stays in tune with its mountainous surroundings. Although it is a large hotel, it still feels cosy. A big plus point is the outside swimming pool at the base of the mountain which, if youre visiting in the winter like I was, its an amazing thing to experience in the snow! If you are visiting in the winter, then the Four Seasons is moments away from the ski lifts and in the summer it has nearby access to Grand Teton National Park for wildlife viewing, as well as Yellowstone. You can also drive to Jackson in 20 minutes should you wish to get a taste of this wild western town.

  • Mountain Biking Jackson Hole

In the summer, Teton Village becomes a mecca for bikers. The hotels ski outfitter turns into an adventure center with a team that can help kit you out with bikes, guides and plenty of advice on the mountain trails and gondolas.

We can arrange an expert naturalist guide to help you make the most of your Grand Teton Wildlife Safari. Sunrise and sunset are the best times of day to spot wildlife - from bison, elk, antelope, moose, black and grizzly bears, and even the elusive wolf.

  • Yellowstone National Park Safari - Lower Loop

At least one full day should be spent at the world's first national park. While wildlife is abundant, it's the landscapes that steal the show - crystalline lakes, thundering falls, azure springs and steaming geysers, including Old Faithful will amaze.
