There are astronomy books in your private house to help identify the constellations – useful to those of you less accustomed to the southern Hemisphere stars. But even without this, it’s hard not to be impressed by the clarity of the stars, the obvious band of the Milky Way and if you’re lucky, the occasional satellite passing by or even a shooting star.

If you have an SLR, why not try your hand at capturing the night skies on film? You’ll need a shutter release cable and ideally a tripod (although you can try balancing the camera at an angle as long as nothing moves it). Set your camera to manual and focus to just before infinity. Set your shutter speed to 40 (or 30 if not) and ISO to around 5000, and then take the shot. From there, just experiment with the angles and settings. Enjoy!
