Description

Set on a 9,000-hectare private reserve at the heart of the Los Llanos floodplains, Corocora Camp is a remote, tented camp offering a unique Colombian safari experience. Discover local wildlife and fascinating cowboy culture in this spectacular region.

Deep in the heart of Colombia’s eastern plains, amongst vast swathes of swaying grass and herds of grazing capybara, lies Corocora Camp. Named after the iconic scarlet ibis that make their home here in the Orinoquía region, Corocora Camp lies on a protected reserve in Los Llanos, surrounded on all sides by miles of lush floodplains and an incredible diversity of wildlife. Having emerged from the grip of conflict, Los Llanos is once again safe and accessible, welcoming visitors to experience its phenomenal biodiversity and deeply entrenched cowboy culture amongst its wild and unspoilt landscapes.

Corocora Camp overlooks the lush, green plains, comprised of just four private safari-style tents and a main mess tent, each with uninterrupted views of Los Llanos. The four tents are simple in style, combining the typical African-style canvas safari tents with local works of art and artisan textiles to give them a uniquely Colombian feel. Comfortable beds are draped with mosquito nets and small en-suite bathrooms allow for hot showers after a long day on the plains. Private decks offer mesmerising views of the grasslands and their inhabitants, from peaceful herds of grazing capybara to flocks of scarlet ibis taking flight.

The main social tent is the heart of the camp, with its comfortable leather sofas adorned with woven Colombian textiles and large table where delicious meals are served throughout the day. Cuisine is inspired by traditional Colombian favourites, served alongside international cuisine, all prepared using the very best produce from the surrounding farms and villages. Hearty breakfasts precede long days spent exploring the wetlands, with lunch often enjoyed al-fresco or out on safari. Dine under the stars, by the light of the roaring camp fire, feasting on local beef cooked over a wood fire in the traditional llanero style alongside a selection of fine wines and spirits.

Days at Corocora Camp are spent discovering the wonders of the plains, be that on guided 4x4 safaris, on birdwatching trips or canoe expeditions in search of pink river dolphins. The wildlife here is abundant and unphased by visitors, having been largely left in peace during the recent periods of conflict. Expert guides will track pumas, anacondas and jaguars, believed to be some of the largest of their kind on the planet due to the plentiful prey that thrives here in Los Llanos. No visit to this wild and remote corner of Colombia would be complete without experiencing the distinct Llanero cowboy culture that has existed here for generations. These impressive horsemen have long herded their cattle across the flooded grasslands, taming wild local horses and singing songs of their ancestors. Spend time in their company, learning how to lasso a rogue cow, riding barefoot through lakes and rivers and understanding their longstanding traditions and culture that is so deeply intertwined in the ebb and flow of Los Llanos.
