Children are welcome at the Manor. Samara's Aardvark programme especially caters for children, taking them on adventure safaris, providing a wealth of activities and hosting young children at the lodge, while parents take a break. Activities include tracking, orienteering, star naming, trampoline tennis, croquet, table tennis, face painting, treasure hunts, crafting with African beads and Spekboom planting.

Game drives are complimentary at the lodge but spa treatments are charged on an additional basis. Other activities include trekking through the bush, birding safaris and exploring the Khoisan paintings of the ancient San people or hunter gathers that walked the Samara plains thousands of years ago.

There is a large swimming pool at The Manor which is particularly inviting during the midday sun.

Passionate conservationists Sarah and Mark Tompkins spent more than a decade buying up 11 rundown farmsteads in the remote Great Karoo to turn the land wild again and provide a sanctuary for endangered cheetahs. The result is a magical private reserve with exceptional viewing of the big cats. In 2005, the Tompkinses opened the gorgeous six-suite Karoo Lodge, incorporating a historic homestead and its surrounding outbuildings. Last year, they converted a second derelict 1920s homestead on the reserve into the four-bedroom Manor.

Camilla Smith (Staff)

One of the most stunning private houses in Africa! It is designed in a really stylish and funky manner with gorgeous works of art and sculpture around the house. There is a wonderful pool, dining and lounge areas, it makes for the perfect private house in the bush for a family or group. It is incredibly private and exclusive with nothing but the gorgeous views of the Karoo from the house. Together with the house you will have your own private guide, vehicle and chef so you are totally self contained!

The staff are superb with children and will be sure to take them out on treasure hunts, get them looking at footprints and animal dropping, it makes for a very educational and fun adventure!
