Highlights
Stunning views over Kenya's wilderness areas
A rare opportunity to get out on foot and track endangered black rhino
Like its sister properties across Kenya, Saruni Rhino is small and personal, with only three bandas available, and a maximum of eight guests in camp, offering an intimate safari experience in a truly unspoilt environment. The bandas are open stone cottages that are nestled into the native landscape and offer sweeping views of a nearby waterhole and surrounding ecosystem. The nearby waterhole is a popular destination for game to stop and drink and offers a range of wildlife viewing just from camp.
The main and special draw of Saruni Rhino is the camp's name sake - the endangered black rhino. The local Sera community members and Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) have work tirelessly for years to create what is now a rhino sanctuary. Offering state-of-the-art protection for 11 black rhinos, the sanctuary is thrilled to be able to offer guests this one-in-a-lifetime experience.
Accompanied by an expert Samburu guide and highly-trained community ranger, you will set out with GPS transmitters to the nearest rhino, leaving your vehicle to continue lightly on foot. Your professional guides can also take you out on traditional game drives to spot the more rare 'Northern Five' - Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich, geranuk, beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe.
Exceptional experiences abound at Saruni Rhino, with the option to visit the nearby 'Fifty Wells', a series of fifty springs where local pastoralists take their livestock to water, or the sacred 'Singing Wells', a rare treat seeing local men sing to their cattle, calling them to the water to drink. Guests can also visit nearby Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, providing needed protection for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves with the aim to release them back into the wild.
Saruni Rhino has one group or family banda, with a large king bed and two single beds that can sleep up to four people, and two double bandas perfect for couples, a single, or friends traveling together. All three bandas offer a private sandy terrace that overlooking the dry riverbed, the perfect place to relax, unwind, and watch the wonderful world of Africa go by.
