Japanese Cultural Holidays
With one foot in its traditional past and the other striding out towards the future, discover the full depth of Japanese culture with a tailor-made Scott Dunn holiday.
- Come face to face with a geisha in the ancient streets of Kyoto's Gion district
- Explore Japan's rich samurai heritage through historic castles, armour collections and traditional martial arts
- Find stillness in centuries-old Zen temples and serene rock gardens
- Travel with confidence with our 24/7 global support
Japan is a wonderful melting pot of complex social conventions, religions and customs, embracing the future yet celebrating the past. For us, there is no better way to unravel Japan and its fascinating culture than by sharing tea with a geisha, discovering the world of anime, learning the art of the samurai or brewing your own sake with local master.
In Kyoto, spend a morning in quiet contemplation at a 14th-century Zen temple before attending an intimate ochaya (tea house) performance by a maiko (apprentice geisha) in the evening. In Kanazawa, feudal-era castle towns and samurai districts offer a window into Japan's warrior history. Across the country, onsen bathing rituals and traditional ryokan stays provide a genuinely immersive encounter with Japanese daily life that goes far beyond sightseeing. But Japan's culture is not frozen in the past, with Tokyo’s global phenomenon of anime, manga and gaming culture. Explore the electric streets of Akihabara, visit interactive digital art installations, and discover the latest technology in one of the world's most innovative cities. Your well-crafted itinerary will weave together all of these dimensions into a seamless and personal journey.
Whether you have a clear vision of the cultural experiences you want to include or you are simply drawn to Japan and want to discover what it has to offer, our Japan specialists take the time to understand your interests, your travel style and your pace, then build a completely bespoke itinerary around you. From organising access to exclusive experiences and hand-picking accommodation, to handling all your travel logistics, we ensure your journey across Japan is seamless and mesmerising.
Types of Japanese Cultural Experiences
Japan’s heritage is best explored through its cuisine, history and local daily rituals that take place. From the iconic, like Geisha performances, samurai lessons and Michelin star sushi, to lesser-known practices like kaiseki dining and the growing vintage streetwear scene. We’ll help you discover it all.

Traditional Cultural Experiences
Kyoto sits at the centre of Japan's living traditions. Its Gion district remains one of the few places where the geisha tradition is still actively practised, and we can arrange private introductions to the art of geisha entertainment, with seasonal Miyako Odori dance performances in the Higashiyama area for those visiting at the right time of year. Kyoto is equally the spiritual home of Zen, with Ryoanji temple and its iconic karesansui (dry rock garden) being perhaps the most famous site for Zen contemplation. Guided zazen (seated meditation) sessions can also be arranged at a number of temples in both Kyoto and nearby Kamakura.
Japan's feudal past is preserved in remarkable detail across the samurai heartland. In Kanazawa, just north of Kyoto, the beautifully preserved Nagamachi district lines quiet canals with traditional earthen-walled residences. Himeji's UNESCO-listed castle is one of Japan's finest surviving feudal fortresses, while the castle towns of Matsumoto and Hikone offer further insight into the era. For a more hands-on encounter, kendo demonstrations and armour-wearing experiences can be incorporated into an itinerary, and a temple stay (shukubo) at the 9th century mountain monastery of Koyasan lets guests live alongside Buddhist monks, join dawn rituals and share traditional shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine).
Beyond the cultural capitals, onsen bathing and sumo round out the traditional experience. The ritual of bathing in Japan's natural hot springs has roots in Shinto purification, and the Hakone region offers some of the country's most celebrated ryokans. Sumo tournaments (basho) are held six times a year in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka, and we can secure premium seats with guided introductions to the sport's culture and etiquette.

Modern Cultural Experiences
Tokyo is the undisputed epicentre of Japan's modern culture, shaping global trends in technology, design, street fashion and entertainment.
It's neighbourhoods each tell a different chapter of that story. Akihabara is the world capital of anime, manga and gaming culture, with multi-storey shops, concept cafes, arcades, and event spaces. A short distance away, Harajuku's Takeshita Street is the birthplace of Japan's most inventive street fashion subcultures, like Gothic Lolita and Decora, while the neighbouring Omotesando boulevard offers a contrast, lined with flagship stores by some of the world's most influential architects. Shibuya, meanwhile, is Tokyo at its most kinetic, home to the world's busiest pedestrian crossing, a thriving nightlife scene and the spectacular Shibuya Sky observation deck.
Head over to TeamLab Borderless and TeamLab Planets for immersive, large-scale digital art installations that intersect art, technology and nature, while Miraikan (the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) and Odaiba's Science City quarter provide further insight into Japan's future-facing innovation.
Beyond the capital, Osaka and Hiroshima each have their own distinct modern identities. Osaka's Dotonbori district is a riot of colour, light, and energy that captures the city's famously irreverent character, while Hiroshima's remarkable story of post-war renewal is told through some of Japan's most thought-provoking contemporary architecture and public spaces.

Gastronomy Experiences
Japan has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other country in the world, and its food culture is woven into the fabric of daily life in a way that is unlike anywhere else.
For a blend of gastronomy and tradition, ryokans offer a true heritage stay and a chance to experience a kaiseki dinner. This tradition of a multi-course seasonal tasting menu is often prepared by the owners of the ryokan you’ll stay in. Yoshimatsu in Hakone is a favourite amongst guests and staff alike.
Tokyo's food scene operates at the opposite end of the spectrum, from the extraordinary spectacle of the Toyosu wholesale fish market to intimate omakase counters with just eight seats and multi-year waiting lists. We can arrange private sushi-making classes with master chefs and sake pairing dinners with expert sommeliers in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Extend the evenings with karaoke in a private booth, refined Ginza cocktail bars, and the high-energy clubs of Roppongi. Further south, the night food stalls of Fukuoka's Nakasu district offer a memorable closing chapter to any culinary journey.

Luxury Hotels & Culture-Led Itineraries for Japan
Accommodation in Japan is itself a cultural experience. For those seeking genuine cultural immersion, a stay in a traditional ryokan is essential. These inns, often family-run and centuries old, offer tatami-matted rooms, yukata robes, elaborate kaiseki dinners and, in many cases, access to private or communal onsen. For those who prefer the reassurance and amenities of a world-class luxury hotel, Japan's major cities are home to some of the finest urban hotels in Asia, including Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Aman and the like.
We’ll balance both as we create your tailor-made itinerary for Japan. Below our sample tours help showcase how it looks before you get in touch and then we’ll start building from scratch.
