Kyoto sits at the center of Japan's living traditions. Its Gion district remains one of the few places where the geisha tradition is still actively practiced, and we can arrange private introductions to the art of geisha entertainment, with seasonal Miyako Odori dance performances in the Higashiyama area for those visiting at the right time of year. Kyoto is equally the spiritual home of Zen, with Ryoanji temple and its iconic karesansui (dry rock garden) being perhaps the most famous site for Zen contemplation. Guided zazen (seated meditation) sessions can also be arranged at a number of temples in both Kyoto and nearby Kamakura.

Japan's feudal past is preserved in remarkable detail across the samurai heartland. In Kanazawa, just north of Kyoto, the beautifully preserved Nagamachi district lines quiet canals with traditional earthen-walled residences. Himeji's UNESCO-listed castle is one of Japan's finest surviving feudal fortresses, while the castle towns of Matsumoto and Hikone offer further insight into the era. Beyond the cultural capitals, onsen bathing and sumo round out the traditional experience. A short distance away, Harajuku's Takeshita Street is the birthplace of Japan's most inventive street fashion subcultures, like Gothic Lolita and Decora, while the neighboring Omotesando boulevard offers a contrast, lined with flagship stores by some of the world's most influential architects. Shibuya, meanwhile, is Tokyo at its most kinetic, home to the world's busiest pedestrian crossing, a thriving nightlife scene and the spectacular Shibuya Sky observation deck.
