Suján Sher Bagh

Suján Sher Bagh

Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan, India

At a Glance

  • Great sociable camp atmosphere

  • A tented camp so when at full capacity you might not be in total silence at night - the tents are very well spaced out but sound insulation is not perfect

  • The food here is a real highlight - we strongly recommend this property for those keen on discovering food

  • The camp is right along the borders of the national park and is therefore frequented by many species of birds, antelope and wild boar, even leopard and tigers have been spotted or heard near the camp - the camp is therefore perfect for those wanting to get close to nature

  • We love the camp hosts and staff here - they make the experience exceptional and more personalised than in larger hotels

Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away during cold winter months.

Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. It’s the hottest season so not ideal for travel, although early April is a good time to get great value for money if you don’t mind the heat. In western Rajasthan temperatures may soar, particularly in May and June, so we'd suggest avoiding Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert at this time.

The monsoon season usually runs from July to September. The temperature drops slightly, and humidity increases. During this period 90% of the rain Rajasthan occurs, although in reality Rajasthan never receives much rainfall. Lakes and rivers will be higher and there's more colour to the landscape.

October to March is the best time to travel to Rajasthan. Expect warm and sunny weather, perfect for exploring and relaxing. Please note that hotels are at their busiest over the Christmas and New Year period. December and January can have very cool mornings and evening and we suggest taking some warm clothing. Whilst temperatures in the desert areas are always hot in the daytime, they become some of the coolest areas of the state once the sun goes down. It’s also normal to expect some fog in the major cities of northern Rajasthan in December and January.

Insider's View

Ask Josef the camp manager to identify the warning calls of the wildlife as predators come into range. It’s a real education!

Tiger sightings are never guaranteed but never forget a good SLR - if you're luck enough to spot one you'll want to snap away with the best of the paparazzi!

Book a full day’s horse safari, outside the reserve, with a picnic brunch, and or sundowners prior to your arival. You have a good chance to spot birds, smaller mammals and maybe the occasional herd of Indian antelope. A great way to explore rural Rajasthan.

Suján Sher Bagh is a small but luxurious tented camp situated approximately ten minutes drive from the entrance to Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan. The staff are exceptionally charming, it is the perfect place to relax after the day's game drives.

Situated a short drive from the main gates of Ranthambore National Park, Suján Sher Bagh’s 12 luxurious tents are set amidst the verdant grounds of a private estate. The camp has a strong eco-friendly ethos and a laid back, welcoming atmosphere. What we love about Sher Bagh is the overall atmosphere which evokes memories of the British Raj, of luxury mobile camps in the wilderness and kicking back with a good G&T at dusk! Expect campaign-style furniture made of teak and rosewood and a sociable feel where all guests get into the spirit. The camp is also a member of the prestigious Relais and Chateaux group of hotels and so the food here is superb.

The tents consist of a bedroom with attached veranda and bathroom and have 24 hour hot water and electricity. All tents have fans and state-of-the-art air-conditioning units to keep them cool during the warm months. There is also one Luxury Tented Suite with a private Jacuzzi and a Royal SUite with private pool.

Sher Bagh has a dining tent serving continental and Indian cuisine, a bar and you can also enjoy an alfresco Thaali dinner around the campfire were guests gather together in the evenings to chat with each other and compare notes on animal sightings. You can also take part in informal cooking/baking classes or delve into the organic garden to select fresh ingredients. Both destination dining and room service is also available.

Whilst at Sher Bagh it is also possible to indulge in an Ayurvedic massage in the comfort of your own tent or in the delightful Jungle Spa. We also adore the main pool, which looks out over the buffer area, meaning you could possible spot the odd deer as you practice your backstroke.

The setting of Sher Bagh is exceptional, there is a watering hole next to the camp area which attracts a myriad of bird and animal species at dawn and dusk and warning calls are often heard adding to the atmosphere of this very special camp.

From Sher Bagh it is possible to take game drives into the Ranthambore National Park which is home to tigers, leopards, striped hyenas, sambar deer, chital, jackals, sloth bears and Indian wild boar to name a few.

Truly luxury camping at its best. All the facilities of a 5 star hotel in a peaceful “bush” setting with first class staff, good food served in “safari” setting under the stars.

Love love love!!! Everythign about this Raj inspired camp is a glorious tribute to 100 years ago (I was born in the wrong era). From the colonial living room (complete with boutique) and dining room spacious and elegantly appointed bedroom tents with glamorous en suite shower rooms to the evening boma and delightful swimming pool. I was even spoilt with a massage in one of it's two spa tents. This is more of a grown up base and is great for couples looking for calm and grace. Tents are however only a few meters from each other so families travelling together would never be far apart.

Emma Neale (Staff)

Sher Bagh has a great atmosphere that is really tangible from the moment you arrive. What really made my stay at this camp special was meal times. Not only was the food delicious, with the staff going out of their way to introduce guests to regional dishes but it was so fun to sit around the camp fire and talk to other guests, exchanging stories of our time in India and on safari
